Nope no provisions for airflow. I even let the sheeting overlap the ground to keep moisture out. It's worked, hope it continues to. If not, bananas will come back from the corm and get almost as tall in a season . The blooms are a novelty for me unless they start real early.

Hey mike I never have had rot issues with these cages. When the lid goes on they are pretty well sealed. Not airtight but not much moisture movement either. I've always used this translucent plastic so I can't answer that question. Since they're not airtight I doubt it will get to hot. Read a few po...

Wow crazy growth Erik what do you feed it? That's a good pic too! What I really wonder is how do you keep it going indoors? Will they tolerate low light ? I've got a small BOP I got late in the year and I'm not sure how to treat it for winter. It's getting carried in and out depending on he weather....

Thank you Kent. Yes duct tape and twine. The stuff great repairs are made of! This will be the third year of protection so I have a pretty decent system now. I will photo document when I cut the tops off and seal them up for winter. I'll also take pix of the palm protection. Very similar to the bana...

Thanks Barb Im hoping for about the same overall winter as last year here. It was pretty decent for OK. Could do without the extreme lows. Far as a top goes, I'll cut a piece of fencing and zip tie it to the top of each cage. Then I'll take a piece of the plastic sheeting long enough to start at the...

Protection

And that's it!
These protected my basjoos last Feb. I think we hit -12F
The p-stems came out green and with rollers pushing the plastic in march. The largest one bloomed and I got some small bananas. Hope to get a bloom sooner this year!

Hope this helps!

Protection

Just keep putting the sheeting on. I overlap the area where they meet by about a foot or so. I secure with duct tape and twine <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26394087@N02/6353116059/" title="photo by ricerocket962001, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.co...

Basjoo Protection 6b-7a Oklahoma

Winter protection only. No earthquake or tornado tips here. I ate my words from Kent's post saying we didn't have any 20's forecast here. While we hit 28, the duration was short. Not long enough to mush the p-stems but enough to zap the raggedy leaf and roller that were left from an early frost a fe...

Wow those are cool ravenala!
How do yall keep them going thru winter?

May I suggest a musella lasiocarpa to the OP? They look similar to BOP and are quite a bit hardier. The inflorescence are nothing alike however. I'm trying one myself outside this year. Here's to getting a bloom next year!

Well We have lows well above the high 20's (which is pretty much doom for basjoo p-stems) for as far as the forecast goes. I'll make a new thread when it comes time to wrap everyone up for winter. Don't want to thread-jack Kent. Last year I experimented and protected one clump and left the other to ...

Looks good guys n gals! We"be been fairly fortunate here in OK I mean winter-weather-wise, We may have to come up with Earthquake, Tornado, and high summer temp protection tho! Kent, do you grow any bananas? If so how do you protect them? We had a frost a few wks ago that zapped all the leaves ...

Barb, thanks. Those guys got full sun till about 4 in the afternoon. There's a big empty overgrown lot with tall catalpas that offer shade in the late afternoon. Full blast til then tho. Lots of watering and drought tolerant palm choices. My potted Mexican fan looks the worst of all, maybe next year...

Next up Sabal birmingham. One of the first cold hardies I bought. Just started pushing palmate leaves this summer. He is going to get planted out next spring. Cameron that trachy will take off with palmate leaves. This sabal pushed more spears this summer than it has in two years - I think due to it...

A tale of two chamerops

These guys both came from Kmart spring 2010. As theyve grown, slight differences have appeared. The first one has shorter petioles, less than 360 deg fans, and the leaflets aren't as prominently bifurcated. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26394087@N02/6280099726/" title="photo b...

Pretty impressive. Our overall winter was fair, but the last two snowstorms we received and the subzero nights just couldn't do them in. Not only are the main trunks pushing leaves but also the lil sucker trunks as well. I protected mine heavily and they came thru great. I think the med fan palm may...

Thanx
I've been watching the boards awhile but never posted.
A pdp and bottle would be really cool as long as you have a place to overwinter them.
I can take some pix later of my small collection and start a new thread as I don't want to derail your thread.

I stopped there too, a few weeks ago - the stand at the old shell station in BA, right? I really wanted a bismark and a bottle palm, but have ran out of room in the garage for winter storage. Heck I wanted a pdp also! All mine made it thru our brutal winter quite well and I chalk it up to the hardyn...
