I think the whole thing about needles always being dioecious isn't always true. I've read online accounts of only male, only female, female one year and male the next, and female+male the same time. I think mine has like 5 male spathes and the one odd spathe that must be female. I can clearly see th...

Jim those look great. Your plants are always spot-on. Erik it's good to hear everyone is happy in their pots. Yea the Sabal Lou is moving like it never got disturbed, it'll have a new frond unfurled soon. I kind of wondered if it would flower this year? How old would you say this plant is? On a sad ...

Looks good Jim. Everything's really moving. The plants needed it after winter '10-'11 and summer '11. Hell we needed it. I hope we're in a decent weather pattern for awhile. Tim, those few inches may as well be miles with a Sabal! The Lou was a transplant and the Brazoria was a new planting as well....

Can't give advice as I've not owned any of them, but all cool choices. I've had their catalog as well, and I think it's neat that most of their plants are tailored to our harsh - at times - climate. The passiflora is the one with alternating sepals of pink and white, it's really neat and should be h...

I wonder if a shrike impaled that bee? I'll see frogs like that on barb wire fence, and first thought is some demented person did it, but there's actually a bird responsible. Helps them hold it while they're eating, but I've seen many prey that was abandoned for whatever reason, and the birds never ...

Is that concrete board around the pool? And you're gonna thinset it and put stone around it right? May I suggest mesh backed flagstone? I did my patio and built a little seating wall veneered with the mesh backed flagstone and I really like it. It's thin, so it cuts easily, and you can grout the joi...

That second one is definately Ensete lasiocarpa. I think the genus was changed from Musella a few years ago. There's a red flowering version, but I have never seen one offered for sale. They are really good looking plants and mine seem to grow faster than my basjoos. They winter in leaf cages just l...

Hey thanks Barb I took those maybe 4 days ago, and you wouldn't believe how much the Goldflame has grown since then. They smell great too. The akebia has already bloomed, it doesn't smell like chocolate to me, but is a fragrant smell. They both stay evergreen for the most part. Yes I saw on the Hard...

Erik we'd be glad to have you guys over in the fall. Like you, I believe it will sulk for a while due to the root disturbance. Surprisingly we managed to spare most of the roots when we popped it out. So here's to a speedy recovery. Barb this soil is great here. It is rocky in places but you have to...

Yes it did have quite the tap root on it. Way heavier than I expected. Unfortunately it's rained all week and today was no exception, so I plan to get it in the ground tomorrow when we get our forecasted break. I have the perfect spot : protected on the north my by shop and afternoon shade by the we...

That's really neat. I'm not knowledgable about the Phoenix genus. However, I'll put my 2 cents in, and that's about all it's worth. I think I read these were 3 years old. They should have more leaves if they're that old, so it's prolly a safe bet they are defoliated every winter. I think what's goin...

I think my palms were damaged more last winter by not watering, than by cold temps. As long as its above freezing and decently warm I've been watering once a week. I figure it can't hurt as long as I keep it out of the spear area. Besides, we are still behind on rainfall and it's been downright warm...

Looks good n green to me! Are you watering it on nice days? I give mine a good drink about once a week if the temps are decent and forecast to be above freezing at night. Just keep it out of the spear area. I would add some milk jugs or pop bottles filled with water around the base of the tree for t...

Barb, thanks. Hope he does well this winter. First year in the ground, everybody else is going on year two. I've heard the cerifera are hardier than other forms, we will see I guess. The bricks help hold heat, like the jugs. Last year I sat overturned buckets over the palms, inside the huts. The bri...

Palm protection 6b-7a oklahoma
Here's how I overwinter my palms. The same methods were employed last year, when we hit -12f a couple nights in Feb. Very similar to how I do bananas, but a few differences. I use the fenceposts, plastic fencing, plastic sheeting and twine/ duct tape to secure. No leaves in the cages; however, I wil...
