My parryi i just use a small size rose cone with a brick on top. I had a thermo cube (the one that failed) controlling 4 or 5 c9 bulbs so one didn't get any heat and got knocked around a bit. The other 2 look great. The sabals were the big size rose cone with a brick on top. Still shocked they pull...

Definitely parryi then. They sell the what I believe to be parryi v couesii. Just dug mine up because they refuse to grow. Will have to fine a better place for them. But watch those spines because parryi ssp neomexicana has thin leaves too while young. It does seem to have different spines compared...

were they regular sabal minors or the McCurtain variety? Just the regular blue pot special from my local nursery. I got them before I knew much. I think they were $7 each on clearance. Turns out I had a thermo cube fail I lost 1 banana the others that were alive grew 18 inches over the winter. I le...

Hate to see your yucca die. They are suppose to be really hardy, but I have never tried one of those. You parryi could be flagstaff form, hard to id while they are small. Where did it come from? I would never let your barrel cacti or agave utahensis get moisture in the winter time. If I was a zone ...

I forgot to mention, I have an Opuntia brachyclada that rotted. I was surprised because I thought all opuntias rated for a zone 5 would do fine here with no protection but apparently not. My cholla from Aaron did fine with no protection as well. Some other Opuntia phaecantha also did fine with no pr...

Cacti, yucca, needle palm, and Southern Mags after winter
Here's a look at the survivors, casualties and the wounded after winter 2014/2015. It was almost as cold here as last year it seems. Although I think we had less snow. Here's my Yucca Gloriosa. I think it survived but some damage is appearing on the leaves. I piled snow on top of it when it got real...

Re: How did your yucca elatas fair?
For some unexplained reason, my newly planted yucca elata got spear pull before winter even started (like in August, it never grew after I planted it) I'm wondering if the spear wasn't dead when I bought it. It grew several pups in the summer and fall however. After this winter it looks like most o...

Yucca glauca question
So I got a yucca glauca from Kelly Grummins last summer. I've planted it and all. It hasn't grown very big but it grew about 5 pups. The thing that I find strange, is that it has filaments. On all the pictures of yucca glauca I've seen, none had filaments. Is this normal?

From what I've read and experienced, not all Crepe Myrtles are equally hardy. They say the ones with the Indian names (like Zuni, Tonto, etc.) are the most hardy. They say they like alot of heat too. We didn't have a real hot summer this year and they did alright. I've even had a Zuni seedling come ...

If anyone in zone 5b is interested, it seems like the CM zuni's took last winter in stride. One came back with no mulch. I have a CM dynamite (which I don't have a picture of because it hasn't flowered yet) that I thought was dead. It finally started growing in July. But the Zunis came back vigorous...

Crepe Myrtles, Mimosas, and Southern Mags also Y rostrata
Last winter was hard for these plants here. There were various success stories though. The most depressing was my mimosa. It wasn't killed to the ground but it lost 1 large branch which significantly changed it's shape. I decided to try an E. H. Wilson mimosa because they are said to be the most har...

I still can't believe rain killed your agave. How does that work? Have you gotten the seeds I sent you to germinate yet? The agave was cover except for the top, the rain water poured down the center of the plant and did not dry out and the plant got bacterial rot. I did and thank you, but with my n...

May this be the last bad winter in the next 20 years. Barb Cheers to that! I should mention that snow was able to get inside the totes where the rostratas were protected as well as the hesperaloes. The faxoniana and parryi were completely covered by plastic totes. There were only small holes drille...

Got some new cacti to replace the ones that died this winter
I ordered 2 Echinocereus Reichenbachiis. These arrived way bigger than I thought they would. I'm liking these a lot. <a href="http://s1250.photobucket.com/user/Springpatch77/media/claretcup_zps57adc2c1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1250.photobucket.com/albums/h...

Causalties and survivors
Like a very large portion of the U.S. winter here was horrible. Last I checked it was the 12th coldest winter on record here. I lost my horse crippler cactus, 2 yucca rostratas, 3 hesperaloe parvifloras, echinocereus reichenbachi var caspitosas, maybe my musa basjoo, maybe my crepe myrtle dynamite. ...
