Chisos Mountains Yucca Rostrata
Last year I ordered a Yucca elata from www.coldhardycacti.com When it arrived I noticed it was a yucca rostrata. I contacted Kelly Grummins (the owner?) and told him that I hadn't had much luck with yucca rostrata and I was really wanting a yucca elata. He told me he would send me my yucca elata (wh...

Ground freeze and Windmill Palms
It seems like I remember reading somewhere that if the soil freezes in the winter, it won't kill a windmill palm. Is this true? Is it necessary to heat the ground around a windmill palm in the winter to keep it alive? If so what methods are used for making sure he ground won't freeze?

One site on Dave's Garden rates Sabal Minor McCurtain as hardy to zone 5b: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/133718/ don't know if they are reliably hardy in zone 5b but with the results you've had, it seems possible. I'm really interested in getting a S. Lou now. The size of the fronds is much mo...

Comparing recent temps to temps in the 70's and 80's
It occurred to me to see what temperatures where like in the 80's and 70's in Springfield. Specifically 77,78,79, and 83. I had always heard that we had worse winters in the past. After the winter of 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 I figured the winters from the 70's and 80's couldn't have been much worse. ...

Nice size minor for $20! Is it a Monrovia? Funny to see an obscure plant like sabal minor being sold by such a big outfit! Everybody's advice is good, don't try to unwrap the roots. If you break a root it will die all the way back to the rootball. I had the bright idea of separating a triple sabal ...

I'm no expert. Root bound is not a big problem. But, if it was me, I'd get some scissors or shears and cut away the plastic pot as best I could. I was able to get the pot off, but the roots were tightly wound around the bottom. They were thick and rubbery so I just decided to plant it like that in ...

Yes, sensitive roots. But, don't fret over the ones that broke. They will grow back, but slowly. I love these, but they are slow. What do you think about breaking the roots. I'm worried that it is root bound but I left it alone for fear that I would kill it if I broke too many. Should I take the ch...

What two? The 2 smallest ones. I'm asking jokingly. I just came back from Panama City and I couldn't resist the urge to dig up some Sabal seedlings in Destin, FL. There were so many all over the place I rationalized that I was just pulling some weeds from them. I dug them out of a Goodwill parking ...

Need help with Sabal Minor
I just got back from a trip south yesterday where I bought a nice sized Sabal Minor. I went to pot it today and I saw that the roots were tightly wrapped around the bottom of the pot. I tried to untangle them but they were thick and rubbery. It seemed like if I tried to untangle them I would break t...

Wow, the cactus handled the cold well for you. I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm in Windsor, it was a little warmer, with a winter low of -26, and a few -22. Losses: a) 3 windmill palms (despite protection) b) 1 needle palm c) gardenia d) 2 Camellias e) 1 buddhist pine (seedling) Severely damag...

cherry laurel "otto luyken"
Anyone had any experience with this plant? I put it next to my house on a side that is protected from the north and west winds. The problem I found out is that it likes semi-arid conditions. I dug it up yesterday and it was sitting in soupy mud. So I did what I do with my cacti which is mix about 66...

I got a small yucca glauca from http://www.coldhardycactus.com/
I also ordered a yucca elata from there, but I found out that if you can find a nursery that buys from Monrovia, they might be able to order yucca elatas in a larger size. I'm waiting on a 1 gallon y. elata right now.
