I was thinking about keeping my McCurtain in a pot for awhile to maybe increase hardiness. Would this be a bad idea? I've heard that Sabal Minors often die due to transplanting.

Here is pic of my Needle Palm I got from Jungle Music. This will be it's 2nd winter in the ground and although I have a 6ft section of plumbing heat tape around the root ball, the only other protection it gets is that 1/2 barrel and the plexiglass top to keep snow off of it. It has no supplemental ...

I heard the palms that come in the blue pots, "the cold hardy palms", are garbage; which is where my needle palm came from. I'm thinking of trying another company to see if their needle's are more hardy. Do you heat your regular Sabals (not McCurtain)?

It's crazy because when I noticed the leaf discoloration we had only had a low of 17 F (zone 8b). It makes me wonder how these can even be grown in northern florida. I suppose they probably don't get that cold in Tallahassee in October though. Do you think protecting them from moisture before an ear...

needle palm question

Is it possible that my needle palm got bud rot already? The newer leaves have a yellowish color to them. I'm wondering if water got in the crown and froze. Can't post pics now but can later if necessary.

Should I leave my Y. elata covered in leaves?

With all the wind that blew through today, alot of leaves got stuck in my yucca elata. I can't decide if this would increase or decrease its chance of survival. On the one hand, leaves insulate. On the other hand, it could trap moisture in the crown. Anyone know if it would be better to leave them o...

cold hardy cacti in cold and wet environment

Does anyone know if barrel cacti and forms of echinocereus will survive unprotected in a cold wet environment (like zone 5b or 6a)? I know some cholla and many prickly pears will survive. Any one ever tried in these zones? I cover my claret cup and small barrel cacti but I'm thinking about uncoverin...

Yucca elata problem?

The last week or so I noticed a change in my yucca elata. It's spear seemed to open up a little and I noticed the newer growth was a lighter color. Awesome! Does your papaya sit in a pot? I've heard this plant doesn't like transplantation, does it? I think you heard right. This one looked bad last year when I put it in a bigger pot. We planted it this year and it took awhile for it to start growing again. It needed way too much sunlight in the...

It was maybe 1 ft tall when we planted it this year. We grew it from seed last year. It was super easy. We just let the seeds dry and threw them on top of soil. we probably threw away 40 seedlings.

I didn't know they could be evergreen. I assumed in places like Orlando FL the cool winters were enough to make their leaves fall off. We saw one in Disney world that was probably over 20 ft. maybe 30. The flower panicles were huge! People here have mixed success with them.
