I just wanted to give an update on the hesperaloe parviflora brakelights. One word - dead. Definately not hardy in my area unprotected. I also protected 2 regular hesperaloe parvifloras and they are also dead. Though I should not that I used a garbage can with a large whole cut out of it to let sun ...

Sorry about the casualties. I had quite a few as well. I lost my horse crippler and I had it covered. My agave did fine, but it was covered. I lost all my rostratas and hesperaloe parvifloras. Do you cover your plants? Do you have any barrel cacti that survived?

yucca glauca

I'm supposed to be getting a yucca glauca in the mail and I have a place in my yard with 2/3 pea gravel and 1/3 sand. would this be an ok soil mixture for yucca glauca or would it be too dry and lacking nutrients?

I think that was me. Still want some? This winter could've been bad for my mimosas. It looks like it got some die back, I'm not sure how much. I don't know what the cold we had will do to the seeds either but it might be worth a try.

How did your yucca elatas fair?

For some unexplained reason, my newly planted yucca elata got spear pull before winter even started (like in August, it never grew after I planted it) I'm wondering if the spear wasn't dead when I bought it. It grew several pups in the summer and fall however. After this winter it looks like most of...

Question about the big El Paso freeze

I think it was in 2011. After viewing El Paso TX on google earth, it was obvious that most of the palms there didn't survive. Some of them did that, actually alot did. I was wondering if that is because they are genetically capable of handling more cold or if it was pure "luck" as some wou...

What happens sometimes with HP is that ... the center part rots out as the leaves are very cold hardy..... The plant will send up new shoots but they may not bloom until the following year. I was wandering if something like that might be happening. We'll see if the resulting plant is worth keeping ...

I didn't know that H. parviflora is hardy in such wet conditions. Maybe it's time to get some 'breaklights' seeds 8) Not sure yet. Updates will be forthcoming... Right now it's covered in snow but the snow will probably be gone in the next couple of days. Still, it looked great after much snow and ...

Yep, I have 2 of them and I have seen many large ones around town. We're pretty much the same climate. My Brackens Brown Beauty looks burnt but never defoliated. My Edith Bogue looks much less burnt. They need lots of water the first couple of years to get them established.

I like the way they look too, I just can't figure out why it keeps leaning over. I heard regular hesperaloe parviflora isn't as hardy. I have 2 that are protected from moisture and look fine. We'll see if 'brakelights' makes it through this winter from hell.

Looks like your's is no longer producing strap leaves. It must be a little older than mine. My desert stuff is protected with those clear plastic totes and it was at least 20 degrees warmer inside the totes on sunny days. And these had holes drilled through them to let moisture out.
