Barb - triangle is in sun during summer, maybe 4 hours of afternoon sun. never had any problem with burning. I do have abottle palm that has fried the last 2 years in minimal sun. I moved it completely out of sun last july, it threw a couple of new fronds that look great and maybe next year I can cu...

new palm pics
Cold morning, killing some time, so I decided to post a few new pictures of my palms taken this morning. My camera quit working over month ago, turned it on this morning, and it decided it was going to work today. Not a great camera and even worse photgrapher, but heres about the best I could do. fi...

Its made with beer for crying out loud, it won't last in my house  I actually have not made any yet. Thought I would get some opinions before I whipped some up. THANKS for your quick response. I went out yesterday and bought some Espoma Palm-Tone all natural organic palm food. Its a 4-1-5 with ...

very interesting Barb. You can't find palm fertilizer in Canada, seriously? Whoever posted this recipe forgot and left out to add 1 oz to a gallon of water. Makes more sense now. I do like the fact that my recipe is for 1/2 can of beer, because then I can drink the other half as I'm fertilizing my p...

Homemade Palm food
Pulled this off the internet while looking for palm fertilizer, it is a homemade palm food.
1/2 can beer
1 cup epsom salts
1/4 cup ammonia
1 cup water
mix together and water normally.
My first thoughts were if I was going to use this I might add it to a gallon of water.
What do you think?

Erik looks like your are on your way to becomming a cold hardy palm nut, welcome. Seems to me you are on the right path. My only advice would be to tie down the tarps and plastic very snug. The wind has a way of blowing palstic around at the worst possible time (i.e like when its snowing and 40MPH w...

Patience my young friend. I don't think you can expect the same growth outside during summer versus inside in winter with similar growing conditions. Summer sun, temps have more to offer than a few lights in your basement. My goal for my basement greenhouse is too keep my stuff alive for next summer...

THANKS for the heads up Paul. I have another thread on this forum titled, winter protection, zone 6, in which I detail my protection method with leaves and bags. I do spray the plants first with a 3 in a 1 fungicidal spray, allow the plant to dry completely and then put dry leaves on top, then a tra...

very nice to see and hear everybody's wintertime strategies. I am going with leaf cages that I used very successfully last year and then going to build a couple of structures with 2 X 4's to protect a couple of T Fortuneis I have in the ground. I also planted a couple of sabal minors in the ground t...

when I bring stuff inside for winter I put it in my garage for a couple of days and spray twice with Schultz 3 in 1 spray which is a miticide, fungicide and insecticide. Once inside I keep an eye on all plants for bugs and such. Spraying every couple of days (with a water and soap mixture) for a few...
