Complaint

Waking up in OK to 7 oF; it is 42 oF this morning in Manzanita, OR.
Why am I here, at a mere 36o N latitude?!?

Wow!

Cold and sunny in OK; OR is warm and wet. I.e., wet from the moisture giving you that snow.

That's my guess. 40s here in OK today; highs in the 20s tomorrow, back up to the 30s for a couple of days then a high of 20 oF for Wednesday.

Manzanita? Going to be (relatively) warm all week.

Oh, shoot!

My guess is a fungal infection. Did you spray them with a fungicide before covering them?

I know little about the shaving brush palms, and my internet research suggests that no one else does, either.
It was NOT foliage hardy! But recovered well. So, perhaps they are a tiny bit more cold hardy that appreciated.

I lost newly in the ground CIDP in Manzanita, Oregon, to the cold last winter. Growing up another in a pot in Oklahoma. It is still outside in Oklahoma! Yes, no complaints about the weather.

Looks like my potted palms (well, cold-hardy species, not bottles etc.) might be out until the New Year.
Long-term forecasts for January call for colder than normal, but December has been delightful in Oklahoma. Well, for an Oregon boy: cloudy, light rain, temps just above freezing.

I found this photo online from the mountain above where my Manzanita palm garden is and it will give you a sense:

The northern Oregon coast set a record high for the date yesterday, of 63 oF. Manzanita got to 64 oF! Strong winds, heavy rain as part of the "pineapple express" bringing tropical weather. I'm sure my palms love it, esp. as this is about the time last when when there were record lows. Okla...

You know, way down here in Oklahoma, those plants you are protecting are the very ones we don't have to worry about (well, except for 2011, but let's not go there).

Going low into the 20s (oF) tonight here in Oklahoma; feel sorry for all the family up in Michigan.
Low 30s in Oregon where I have unprotected palms.

I'm a fan of pipe heating tape as not too expensive and low in electricity use.

Wheel,
well, will do some good. You'll just get foliage damage where frond tips touch the outer surface. The palms themselves should be fine.
So, how cold is it there now? Snow?

Barb,
I hadn't posted on CIDP as sad. Yes, dead. It had some green in May so I hoped it would recover but it didn't.

The Trithrinax is my first. I made it through that cold winter quite well, and recovered nicely over the Summer. :D

Andy, Yes, I'm astonished by the Nikau survival and recovery! might try a Butia in 2015. I tend to think of them as wanting more heat (hey, what palm doesn't!). I was most astonished by the recovery of the Nikau or "shaving brush palm." When I first saw it in May, I assumed it was dead. Then, I saw some green, so I didn't pull it out. It grew some while I was there into June. I was gone until October and amazed at how much it had grown in one summ...

This photo shows a planting bed I'm making in the front, on a steep bank. Right/upper is the street. Left/lower is the gravel driveway. End of season report from Oregon coast

Thanks for the update! That is great news. I think with zone 7a, you should be fine with the protection you described. I'd spray fungicide before wrapping.
