Bamboo all over the continent is getting hammered this year. If it took -9F and you didnt have full defoliation thats pretty amazing. There are only a few bamboo that can take that as well as yours seems to have taken it. A few Fargesia (Nitidia, Maurielae), some Phyllostachys (maybe areosulcata, vi...

Hey Mike.... You ever get those bamboo Identified? What were the lows? You might just have defoliation. You can look at the nodes between the branches and see if the buds are viable. Exactly like trees. Best to wait untill it warms up. Its possible you have some tip/top kill. That doesnt mean anythi...

I would try any of the pauciflora. The ssp niphophila is supposed to be the hardest. Any sub alpine or alpne eucalyptus should work because they tend to die back sometimes up there to the snowline.

If you have reliable snow cover in the winter, then you should see the trunk survive under the snow. It may take a bit to get a seedling that will do such, but its possible. Many eucs can take into the -20s as long as there is enough snow to protect the roots and lower trunk.

Nanus only gets hardy when it gets larger. It has a large subterranian trunk. IT grows slow as molases though.... It is indeed a gorgeous palm. I think the benefits of trying it over a t fortunei is that they stay small and should be easy to protect ( at least comparing it to a larger palm like t fo...

Crooked Basjoo plant and corm

I planted my Basjoo this year and within a week or 2 I realized I didnt plant it deep enough in the pot or the soil finally settled. Either way, I had to bury it a bit deeper in soil. What seemed to have happened is that the plant ended up leaning having half the corm buried deep and half of it some...

Albizia julibrissin anyone?

Off and on I find some information about this tree saying they survive reliably in zone 6, but the roots can survive zone 5 or lower with a deep snow pack or good protection of a stump. Has anyone here tried these? They seem to be all over the east coast of the US.
