Get Fargesia Rufa or fargesia Maurele. I say the Rufa, cause thats what I have. If it survived here, you wont have any problems whatsoever, even without protection there. Eucalyptus Experiment.
Ive read that some Eucalyptus species can be grown as a die back perennial, and even with multch, leave some of the turnk alive, in zones as cold as zone 4 or 5. Have you heard of this?

Paul, I think the trick was that I totaly buried it before the ground froze. The temps were about -10C at night here, a night ot 2 at around -15C, and the dyas were around 0C to about 6C, then the night temps dropped in aa day to about -20C, after i buried it. Today i unburied it. I took all the leaves off of it ( it ended up being ar 5C today, but more like 12 C where the bamboo is.) and let it soak up some sun. I lefet a 2 inch layer of leaves around. Im pretty confindent that everything should come up perfect. Mabey not as many canna..... although some are hardy to zone 6ish..... We also had about 30CM of snow ( about a foot) fall on christmas here, but it was very very warm this winter.... with the exception of mabey 2 or 3 weeks...... and MAYB...

I read something years ago. Someone build a makeshift greenhouse around sensitive plants. They then had 2 or 3 steel drums ( like oil drums) filld with water, insulated, and painted back. They then set up mirrors or reflect the sunlight ( therefore making it oncentrated) and pointed it at the drums....

The temps are taken at the airport in THunder Bay. Which is at least 3 or 4 miles inland. My house is less then a mile to the lake. I am looking to try some "on the edge gardening". Im in what is said to be zone 3-4, but Id say its zone 4 myself. With proper multching, i belive i can bring the zone up to 5, and mabey 6, with other measures. Basicly, I would like suggestions, no matter how far fetched on what to try up ...
