Real deal?
Kansas I can tell you the Washingtonia filifera seeds are about the size of a bb like from a gun. They are light brownish in color. The D. wheeleri seeds look like you described are the real deal. I would go ahead and germinate and plant. Here is a site for germinating seeds and where the roots come...

Kansas these seeds will germinate in my opinion just as fast and deal with the cold better than W .robusta.They are reportedly 5 degrees more cold resistant than W.robusta. I just sowed my first 50 seeds of W. filibusta I`m sure they will germinate just the same as either species. With protection th...

Kansas you should plant them when you see the root and green stem are going separate ways. Plant so the green stem is just below the suface of the soil. I would use 1 gal pots with well draining soil, peat ,perlite or vermiculite coarse sand mix it all together. I would also use superthive to satura...

Yuccaman ask them if they come with a one year guarantee. I would think that these would be run of the mill Trachy`s and you would definitely have to protect them anything under -15 c 4.5 f to have any foliage left the next spring. They may survive below these temps but the tree will be playing catc...

Kansas sounds like you have taken good care to separate those Pygmies. I think you will know within a week or two if the operation on the quadruplets went well LOL. I would leave the falling fronds as long as they are still green. I never cut any frond unless it is almost brown. Good luck John 8)

no root separation
Kansas I would leave it as is and just cut the dead trunks to just above soil level. I had the same exact thing happen to one of my pygmies and it is doing fine with less competition for water, light ,and nutrients. Regards, John 8)

Wind and cold?
Although we get cold temps in Kelowna so far a zone 7a this winter. I think what is going to be the determining factor in survival of cold hardy Yuccas and Palms is the lack of wind .We rarely have wind ,and if we do it is usually a slight breeze.I here all the time how it is the wind that does the ...
