thanks Jim. I applied it exactly how you said. I put burlap, I then wrapped in heat tape, I then wrapped in pink insulation and finally covered with waterproof sack. The only thing I did not check is for condensation. I did not put heat tape over top of insulation. That is green painters tape. Last ...

Update
Hello I noticed my trachy leaning lately. So since the temp warmed up decided to check it out. Found out the heat tape wire was fried. Dont know if it was because of the insulation over the heat tape, or faulty heat tape thermostat. Last year I just wrap my plants in heat tape , burlap and shrink wr...

Easy House Plants!
Which tropical plant or plants do you find easy to take care of after being brought in for the winter? Let me start I have had the giant white bird of paradise, strelitzia nicolaigiant, in house for 2 winters. Just water it and its fine. love it! On the other end of the scale I have very little luck...

Ponytail palm dividing. What type of soil?
Hello I bought a ponytail palm with 7 plants in one pot so I wanted to divide them. I pulled it out of pot , separated roots carefully, using a 4 inch clay pot with drainage hole I put rock in bottom that I had washed and bleached. I then put plant and soil in pot. My question is I used a tropical s...

beer cooler
Hey Tim I like the beer cooler idea. It keeps a small area warm with plenty of room for seed baggies or containers. This allows you to keep more seeds warm than just putting the baggies on the heating pad. It probably uses far less energy as well. But...... where do you put the beer?

Sounds great , I will have to get some t- cubes for next winter , one question does the t-cube go inside the structure or outside? So what do we do now wait till next spring and see if our winter protection is a success? Or do we buy more tropicals? Get some seeds? take a holiday? lol

Thanks guys for the remarks. Last year all I did was put burlap , heat tape, burlap and shrink wrap and both my european palm and Musa Basjoo survived no problem. This year I replaced the shrink wrap with 4 inch pink insulation wrap and waterproof cover. I am thinking this is much better protection.

Here is pictures of how I protected my Musa Basjoo plants. Used the same style last year but this year used pink insulation instead of shrink wrap. I noticed shrink wrap held in moisture. 2010 Wodyetia Bifurcata Foxtail palm Speckled stem?
I have a foxtail palm that was grown from seed in 2010. I noticed the stem is speckled and a little bit of a white powdery looking stuff at 1/4 way up stem. was not sure if this is normal or there is something I should do. Any advice would be appreciated. http://s12.postimage.org/xxue3uie1/DSCN1394....

I have planted a couple of new palms in the last 2 years. I always dig a hole, put gravel in bottom of hole, and then add good soil or potting soil with good drainage.
