Loving this winter!

It hit 23 oC yesterday in Manzanita!
It is 3 oC now in Tulsa. Chilly, but not bad. Esp. compared to five years ago today when it was "colder than the South Pole" with an all-time record low of -35 oC.
So, no complaints from me. But, W stills wants us to move to Florida. :D

I know this reputation, but in my experience they are not any more difficult than other palms.
KrisK here has one of mine. It is doing way better for him than it did for me. I have moved others, out to Oregon.

OR & OK

My palm garden on the Oregon coast is doing great, based on the last photos my family sent. They have had great warmth (even to 60 oF!) and amazing rain from a strong of storms. Good thing I am not there now, though, as the highways all around are closed from flooding and landslides. Warm in Oklahom...

I suspect the sun plus cold; it was under a deciduous tree that lost its leaves. At 36 oN, winter sun can be strong. Plus, it was small so roots not deep.

There are others around here, but most are sighted to get winter shade. And are larger.

At my Oregon place, all easy. In Oklahoma, most of those do fine. I have lost Aucuba before when not protected.

I grew a dawn redwood in Oklahoma a decade ago. It suffered growing tip damage in a cold winter, so I suspect that would happen annually in Michigan. I can ask my father in law up in Manistee if anyone there has them. Which I doubt. Bald cypress give the same look and they are much hardier, in Oklah...

In Manzanita, Oregon, the highest I found was 83 oF. That is about as warm as it ever gets there: Portland was >100 oF then.
In Tulsa, the highest has been 102 oF a few times. As with Jim, the rains are keeping the heat down.

I like Kris' idea to plant it in the Spring. IMO, these are tough palms. I've seen them in habitat here in Oklahoma. Most grow along stream banks where they get flooded a few times per year. But, I've also found wild ones on high, rocky ground. Yours looks great, and $20 was a super price. Buy a bun...

Weekend planting (sorry, no palms)

This is the old, rotten hot tub that once hosted a canary date palm. Until December, 2013, brought record lows here in Manzanita. Killed it. I don't know how long this tub will make it so I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Thus, I bought a collection of tropical-looking plants, plujs added in so...
