Flowering Windmill Palm in Wisconsin!
Planted this one as a 15 gallon in 2010. Let's start at a distance. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/IMG_4886_zpse563aa9c.jpg A little closer. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/IMG_4887_zps36b6f759.jpg Oh my... what do we have here?? http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxm...

2013 Front Garden
My front yard garden is 95% finished. All I'm waiting for is my elephant ear bulbs to finish sprouting in the greenhouse and then they will be planted along side the ensete maurelii to fill in the gap! So without further adieu, here are some pictures! My two trachies. Applied epsom salt last weekend...

Magnolia Grandiflora 'Edith Bogue'
I had the local garden center order me in a 15 gallon Edith Bogue as they normally aren't carried up here. Tag on the plant says Zone 5+ so hopefully with some light protection the next few winters this will establish nicely. Planted it yesterday. What's the best way to prune this so I can get it in...

Well after warm weather the past week - 60s, 70s and 80s (was 87.9 yesterday), my largest one is still showing NO GROWTH. I marked the spear when I uncovered in March and it's still in the same darn spot. No spears pull, but a lot of the existing fronds are bronzed in areas (sunburn? cold damage?). ...

Windmill Palms Declining?
I'm wondering if my windmill palms have reached the end of their rope up here in Wisconsin. When I uncovered them back in March, they were 100% green. We've had temps in the 30s/40s/50s since then and no nighttime lows below 23 or so. Well over the course of the last month, I've noticed brownish spl...

Do the petioles feel rubbery? Not a good sign my friend. I had a robusta that looked like that and it gave up the ghost -- root rot from too much moisture / cold soil. Buy a temp probe and take the soil temp next to the palm. If it's below 55-60 you won't be getting any new root growth and the water...

Aw, Ben, that's sad. We appreciate what you're sharing about what's not working. I think any tight wrapping on any palm is trouble because of lack of air circulation, especially when they heat up late winter. It costs more to heat the air inside a box/wider enclosure but IMO it's worth it. Barb Yea...

Uncovered my Windmill Palms today!
Well, it's Palm Sunday and being busy next weekend, I decided to uncover my palms today. It's not ideal out -- 33F and snowing, but what the heck -- they're trachys!!! Forecast is for 30s early this week, warming to near 50F by next weekend, so all should be OK! Just before I started. http://i7.phot...

Here's an update on my antifreeze experiment with a pygmy date palm. Palm was outside in subfreezing conditions for approximately 96 hours with the minimum recorded temperature of 12 degrees F. After this period (Sunday), I moved it into my greenhouse which varies between 60 degrees F and 85 degrees...

Palm "antifreeze"
I'm in the final stages of developing a palm tree "antifreeze". I quietly started this project several months back as I have always wanted to increase a palm tree's cold hardiness. In order to do this, you need to perform some genetic modification on the palm tree to survive severe freezes...

Allow me to complain
This "spring" has been pure torture thus far. Since I've had palms, until this year, they were never covered this late. Here is my forecast for the next week. It's an endless nightmare of January temperatures. Saturday: Scattered flurries before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29. Nor...

Tim, trachies / rhodos look great. Good work. And this year, you're planting a Phoenix again, if I recall. What a whack of snow ... :? How are things coming along in the GH? Took the cover off today. It had a string of 100 mini lights and one layer of poly for protection. Looks fried, ugh.

Magnolia grandiflora '24 below'
Here are some pictures today of my magnolia grandiflora '24 below' that I planted last spring. Basically it had a wind break for protection this winter, with 100 mini Christmas lights wrapped around it (but I don't think they really did anything, lol). http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/I...

Glenn, I remember Stein's selling the BBB a few summers ago. They stopped selling them because I guess they were dying in our area and people wanted the refund/replacement. I'm trying to get a big BBB this spring and I'm going through hell finding a nursery to order me one in. Either they want to go...
