Some pictures ... including inside greenhouse shots!
Trachy looking great!! Not even minor damage to the emerging spear. Last year I had the yellow ring of damage on first two fronds. This year two fronds have pushed out already and both look pristine! This thing is gonna get huge this year!! http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/5ae93065.jpg ...

Magnolia now completely defoliated. Buds are looking ok though. Still flexible. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/765c17dd.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/b4613932.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/dc7b3501.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman...

New Greenhouse
Picked this up at Menards a few days ago. Stuffed it full with my tropicals and some flower seed flats. It's 75 in there with a dewpoint of 70 while it is only 51.3 outside! Next year I'm setting it up mid March and stuffing it full. Should be able to get huge robust plants before its even...

Mowed the lawn for the second time tonight. Took some pictures of how everything is progressing. Also wanted to show you some flashbacks to the same time period last year. Emerald green! http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/c7ee1f79.jpg This was taken 4/7/2011. Almost a FULL TWO WEEKS later...

Hi Tim, that first bud looks damaged and/or dead. Hopefully the Mag will flush out big time for you and it will get more established. My Mag has never seen a high temp in the low single digits. The coldest high was probably 10-12F or so. Lowest temp was -8F. BUT mine is against a south facing 6' ta...

Southern Magnolia Experts -- Dieback?
I'm wondering if one of my stems is dying back. While it previously looked fine, one of the buds appears to have shriveled up a bit. Also there is some discoloration appearing on the stem. We've had temperatures in the 70s for the past week, so maybe now significant damage is first showing up? Take ...

Re: Mildow on Palms of my Windmill Palm
I am in Windsor Ontario and I reviewed the forecast temperature and the average temperature and there was nothing under 10 'c. So I decided to open my winter projection. I am so glad I did. There were six branches that were full of mildow. I cut all six off the tree and the rest of the palms look g...

Trachy uncovered for almost a week - Insane forecast inside!
We may be going for the warmest March ever! Almost constant 60s/70s for highs for next week and a half when the normals are low 40s/mid 20s for highs/lows. We will end up being fully leafed out by April 1st if this continues - 30 days early! And of course, a picture. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums...

Hit 34F today, low tonight is 28F. Tomorrow's high 53F, Wednesday 56F. Then 40s/50s/60s for rest of 15 day outlook. Uncovered my trachys. Looks like they pulled through last nights debacle. It hit 8F when the forecast low was in the 20s. I didn't have any heat on and the internal temperature of the ...

Unfortunately, I think it's going to die. How much light was it getting in the garage? I had a robusta under too little light that got all limp and just died. I think it was also coupled with too moist of soil. Best bet is to replace the soil immediately with a lightweight mix that's barely moist. G...

Waking bananas up for the spring...
A couple of weeks ago I brought my orinocos up out of dark storage and started waking them up. Tonight I brought my large ensete maurelii up from dark storage and potted them up. Added a light soil mix with perlite and gently watered until moist. They are all in front of the window. Last spring I ma...

Uncovering my Trachys in February!
Came home from work early and decided to start dismantling the protection. I took off the foam and removed the west panel. Going to leave the other three panels up with the roof for another week or two. If some freak cold comes, I can quickly staple a layer of poly on the open side and throw in a he...

Another video update. Magnolia leaves looking pretty much toast. Hope it doesn't have any dieback. <object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/y6wv4V_Mljk?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScree...

Hi Tim You went for the small pack of Tracy seeds? Boy that's a lot of work. I remember when Kiril sent me 3,000 of his Bulgarian palm seeds back in 2000......my wife did not care for the 10 flats of seedlings in the kitchen. I could not understand.......does't everybody keep seedlings all ov...

Yes, the snow is gone again. LOL. Non-winter continues, 42 today, 48 tomorrow, 50 Monday. My ground has ZERO frost in it. Was digging around in my beds a bit today, lol. Magnolia 'Edith Bogue' is pretty burned, hoping it gets better with the years to come. -5F probably did the most damage. Most othe...
