New Greenhouse
I'm in the process of building a new greenhouse that's 8'x10'. I went with 8' because that is the maximum width I have to work with and I went with 10' because 12' wide x 100' long poly is what I have to work with... that gives me a little on each side to seam over. I've put down a 2x6 base and a 3/...

More pictures -- cooler day today!
Thought I would take some pictures today. It was relatively cool around 80 degrees with a dewpoint in the lower 50s -- real pleasant after a summer of mostly upper 80s and 90s with lots of humidity. This is what you see as you walk up to my house from the sidewalk. I love this angle. http://i7.photo...

Time for a picture update as we enter August. The yard is easily starting to look very alien for Wisconsin, lol. Do you take the Croton in every winter or is that a plant that overwinters without protection? Also, do you have any photos of your palms at night with the lights on? I'm trying to find a solar powered spot that will give good light for at least 4 or 5 hours. Croton is dug up in the fall and I over...

Re: Your front yard
Yes, the yard looks awesome!!!! Did you grow your Trachycarpus for a while indoors before planting it outside, or did it start from a younger plant outside? I live in zone 5B/6A depending on the map you look at. I planted the big one as a 3 gallon in 2008. The middle one was planted as a 15 gallon ...

Great pics Jim. How long have your oldest trachys been in the ground now for? And how big were they when planted? I thought yours were in the ground longer than mine and I can't figure out why mine are rocketing toward the sky so fast. You experiencing the drought down there too? I have to water alm...

Welcome to July! Pictures inside.
Hot and humid this last week with mostly 90s for highs. 90s again all this week and maybe 100+ for Tuesday. The watering needs are heavy in my garden. The trachy lineup! http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/wxman81/5e2a7076.jpg Closeup of one I planted in 2008. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255...

I was outside tonight watering the heck out of everything. There's two things I do a lot of in summer -- water and fertilize. I probably water every other day in June, July and August. I fertilize my palms with Carl Pool twice (early May and July 4th) and then hit them with Miracle-Gro liquid fertil...

Nice! My BBB had some stem die back this year and lost all but 2 leaves... Hope it recovers. If not, I've heard good things about Kay Parris (not leaf hardiness but stem hardiness) and the Spring-grove selections. I'm trying both KP and Spring grove #19 this year, we'll see if they can handle the z...

Installing a Magnolia grandiflora '24 below'
UPS came with my Magnolia grandiflora '24 below' today from Rare Find Nursery. I figured I would take extra care and plant this one right. When I received the 'Edith Bogue', I just dug a hole and stuck it in. Might have been a contributor to its demise, who knows? So here is what I bought. http://ww...

Tim, love the look of the beds with the larger pine nuggets. If you're in a windy area, they tend to stay down versus the other stuff that blows away. You don't want to give that Magnolia some time to recover? Gorgeous work! Barb Thanks Barb. Magnolia '24 below' is on its way. The one in the ground...

Major ... MAJOR update!! 2012 garden is IN!
Spent about 2 hours last night and another 7 hours today finishing my 2012 plantings. Fertilized with 10/10/10 and watered everything in well. Temperatures are supposed to be 70-80 all week so growth should commence immediately! Here are a TON of pictures to show what I've done this year ... should ...
