That's a really nice fern. I was surprised how common and abundant ferns are on mountain sides in Hawaii on my last visit. Other then tree ferns, do you grow any other ones? I've seen some really big ferns growing on the west coast, but not sure if they'll grow here in the great lakes area.

Wow, the cactus handled the cold well for you. I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm in Windsor, it was a little warmer, with a winter low of -26, and a few -22. Losses: a) 3 windmill palms (despite protection) b) 1 needle palm c) gardenia d) 2 Camellias e) 1 buddhist pine (seedling) Severely damage...

Hi Paul, It's a 'Greensboro Red' Camellia rated for zone 7a, but seems more hardy than other one's I've tried. This is the third winter I've had it. I planted in full sunshine on the south side of my house, the first year. It's in a shaded spot now, but I think the sunshine helped it grow the first ...

I'm wondering if a cover to protect them from winter wind / sun would allow them survive a zone 6b winter. I noticed a huge difference in my needle palms, just by sheltering them from winter winds. I have a picture of the Gardenia, I think it's actually the frost proof variety not Kleims. I left it ...

A little disappointed, but thank you, that link was very informative. I'm still a little hopeful my gardenia might comeback from the roots. If not, I think any future gardenia I buy and leave in the ground will need to be heavily protected.

Summer snow gardenia

Looking to replace my Kleims hardy gardenia. I left it outside for the first time this winter, and unfortunately we had the coldest February in a hundred years. Don't think it made it. Has anyone tried growing the summer snow gardenia? It claims to be more hardy (zone 6) with larger size and complic...

I'm not too sure what he does for winter protection. The garden seems to be in zone 6b, Ohio. From what I recognize, he has musa basjoo, giant elephant ears, castor beans, and red abyssinian bananas. I think the castor beans are grown from seed. The red abyssinian and elephant ears can be overwintered...

Just to clarify, That's not my garden. Just saw the video on youtube, and thought to post it here because it's in a relatively cool zone 7. All credit to "bamboomoe" for the video and the garden. Most of my tropicals are in pots, and the few plants I left in the ground this year won't prob...

We're still relatively warm, so I haven't yet needed to protect the palms yet. I'm reconsidering the tubes, due to the comments. At least for this year, I can store the palms in the garage with less trouble then building a box. Thanks for the replies.

Round cement forms

I want to overwinter my palms outside, they're getting too big to bring inside. I'm thinking of using the round forms used for building cement columns. Mostly because the tubes have the right shape, are cheap, and disposable. I would cover the tubes with a tarp, and wrap the palms with pipe heating ...

buddhist pine - pretty tropical looking, anyone growing it?

I went to the Belle Isle conservatory today, and I saw a mature Buddhist Pine in the conservatory. Despite its name, shaped into a tree, it fits in very well with tropical plants. Just curious if anyone has tried growing one of these outdoors? Websites have it ranked to zone 7 They also had Fatsia J...

I've seen these fruit salad trees for sale before at HD, but with only up to 5 varieties. Still, I think the difficulty in growing these is that one variety will outgrow the other ones. No real world experience with them tough.
