I have family in Seattle that also own a few coffee shops. They used many buckets of the left over coffee grounds for amending their soil. I'm not sure how much it helps to make the soil acidic, as their soil is probably pretty acidic to begin with. Their garden does grow very well, so its probably ...

Thank you, that plant looks nice, I haven't considered cherry laurel before. The other plant I was thinking about using was camellia, because of the large flowers and dark glossy leaves. But, I'm not sure if I can prune the camellias into a nice box shape, like the cherry laurel. The hedge would be ...

banana shrub (michelia figo magnolia)
For a very long time I've been looking for a plant suitable for an ever green hedge that flowers, that can also handle being pruned into a box shaped formal hedge. This has to be the nicest plant for this purpose I've found yet. Here's an example: http://www.houzz.com/Michelia-figo-hedge/ and what t...

Anyone growing Rhododendrons?
So far I have about 5 different kinds including some azaleas. I like how glossy their evergreen leaves are, and in bloom, they look tropical to my eyes. The problem I have is that they seem to bloom for a very short period in the spring only. I came across this link, claiming that you can get differ...

Thanks for the help. In this location its also about 4 feet away from a south facing wall. Hope that will make a difference next winter. I would like to move it to the front of the house, but its very windy there in winter. Found a video of this plant growing in Salt Spring Island BC, for anyone int...

Thanks for your help. I planted the thing in the ground for now. Will take out in December before winter hits and keep it in the garage. It seems like this is a dwarf variety, as it only grows to 10 feet. Here are a few pictures. Hope this works http://home.cogeco.ca/~plugins/public/1.JPG http://hom...

Arbutus Unedo (Strawberry tree)
Any tips on growing and Arbutus Unedo in zone 6b, Windsor, Ontario. I purchased the tree today on clearance for under $20. Not a huge investment, so willing to risk overwintering it outside if at all feasible. Tree is currently about 7 feet tall. Plan on planting it on the south side of my house. I ...

Thanks for the info about Tulip Trees. I visited Rondeau Provincial Park and Point Pelee in the last two days and I saw quite a few Tulip trees ... now that I knew what they look like. There are many more of them at Ronduea, at least where I went, than at Point Pelee. However, none of the ones I've ...

Yes, Liriodendron with yellow tulip like flowers. I've been to the Redwood forests in Washington, and Oregon, it was a very memorable experience. Is there a region in Ontario or Michigan where there is a forest of Tulip trees, preferably where you can go camping? I find it interesting that there are...

Tulip Tree
Any experiences growing a tulip tree? I saw one close up this weekend for the first time, not in flower, and I really liked the lush leaves that the tree has (saw the flowers on-line) This has to be one of the pretties native north american trees. Why isn't it grown more often?

Thank you all for the great suggestions. I've seen Magnolias under planted with big leaf rhododendrons, in a park in Amherstburg, Ont and it looks great. Any recommendations for a Canadian source of the ever green magnolias, pawpaw tree or kiwi? Ontario or online? Canadianplant - yes it is Albizia j...

Trees and Bushes with great showy summer flowers
I love Hawaii :) but, I live in Windsor, Ontario zone 6b/7a. It drops below -18 Celsius one day a year or so. I like palms and I'm trying to grow a few as other people here. But I also want to fill my garden with flowering trees and bushes. They don't necessarily have to be tropical, as long as they...
