I'm sure the heat didn't help it at all. It does look better since I took I took lights away and we've had some mild temps.

I'm sure it will. There is a guy in Michigan I think that has one like 12ft+ high and all he does is mummy wrap it. It defoliates of course, but comes back each year. Last year I closed up protection just fine and I unwrapped a nice green large frond palm in the spring, and we had snow all the way t...

I would have been just fine if I hadn't listened to the weather forecast before I went out of town. They said it would only get to low 20's but as I said, it bottomed out at 9 deg F I could have easily thrown the tops on them and would have been fine and put all the potted palms I left outside in th...

Well, the fronds were getting close to the eve of the house and each year the root structure will be that much larger. Was just going to move it like 2 feet away from the house. There isn't anything left to cut anyway, I removed all the dead fronds and added some copper fungicide around the crown ju...

Cold Damage even for a short time..

Back in the fall I built some protection, Christmas lights etc but didn't put the top on cages since it was still nice. Dropping to 9 deg F for just one night while out of town did it's damage to even the partially protected. I think the enclosure itself made it worse by trapping the cold air inside...

I am going to try more Sabals this year. Since the Hatteras is doing just fine in the ground, along with a Mc Curtin seedling I have a Riverside that is still in a pot that I bought from Phil when I was in San Diego in the fall, and have a Louisiana coming next week from Steve Anderson.

I was, but Needle looked just fine. It had barrell, but no top and root heat was plugged in. It didn't look dried out until I added the Christmas lights that week around Christmas when it got to below zero and put top on. Funny thing is Cape Hatteras Sabal looks fine, and even had more insulation ar...

Thanks Jim....I did put some HP down where the pull was and backed it up later with some copper fungicide, unplugged the christmas lights but left the clear cover on since freezing rain was forecast...and hope for the best. I did leave the heat tape around the root ball to remain plugged in. it's on...

I agree. Will leave on for one night so HP doesn't freeze but will keep lid off so heat doesn't build up. Would hate to loose it now after it's gone this far.

Yea, I did put some HP down where the spear pulled. Will keep lid off but plugged Christmas lights back in so the HP doesn't freeze in the hole. Wonder what causes the drying out of the fronds?? I thought maybe it got too hot in there being on the south side of the house and the Christmas lights etc...

Spear Pull?

Does anything other than crown of palm getting wet and freezing cause a spear pull?? Checked my in the ground (2nd winter) Needle Palm that has heat tape buried around roots, and a 1/2 barrel with plexiglass top on south side of house. With the onset of the bad cold snap I did add a string of 25 Chr...

One of my more sensitive cold hardy palms, first year in the ground Mexican Fan Palm. Has lived through 9 degree (partially protected) cold. Added 2nd string of Christmas lights to help with cold. Sun hitting it this time of day adds easily to the temp as well. http://s22.postimg.org/j96opjhfh/photo...

Yes, exactly...Usually I have more of a issue with enclosures getting too hot on sunny, mild days...and with moisture/condensation. Since I've learned from my mistakes each plastic enclosure has a couple of slits cut to help with venting humidity out and when I know it's going to be nice for a few d...

Not sure if it's a record here for Omaha for this date but -14 deg F this morning. Anything that makes it through this Winter I would think has to gain some cold hardiness. Will be interesting to hear from members this spring to see how everyone fared. http://s24.postimg.org/ubz0hzhzl/photo_4.jpg

This wouldn't be fun hobby if we all didn't experiment and push limits! Maybe in a year or two I'll take one of my Bizzy seedlings and plant in the ground with root heat and a cage and see what happens. If my Pygmy date palm makes it this winter, I might have some success with a Bizzy.

No, the ribbed ones. It hasn't thrown any new leaves but has gotten a bit larger. We'll see how it does since we have a lot of Winter yet to go yet.

If it makes it through this winter, it will survive anything.
