Yes Jeff, i saw some Cocos nucifera at Clearwater, but there was in bad shape with just few leaves. The sand was like flour, same texture...first time i saw that. Was very special. Hi guy's, here s some pics about the wrapping i did 2-3 weeks ago around Montréal. Hope everything will do well. No Mike, i stoped at Point Pleasant last summer, it was the first time i went to the US in car. I loved the NJ coast, for sure next summer we want to go down again, but this time we want to go a bit farther like exactly Cape May or Atlantic city :D ...

Mike,
With my experience, my 5 foots and 8 foots tall Trachy was without protection a few consecutive days below freezing point and had no damage. Even at 0F for a night and warming up to the 10F. I tried that for one day last winter. Mine take easily 5-10 F.

Here's a video of a 7 foots Trachy and 12 foots Butia Under protection. I protected these palms 2 days ago, the Trachy is Under the box and the Butia Under the mummywrap. I never had problem with that before, cause the heat produced by the CFL is low. I never had a burned CFL after a winter, but i change some just in case. Its -8c ( 15F) this morning, and i still have a lot of Trachy, Needle and Chamaerops uncovered. And all looks fine...will warm up tomorrow, but today the high is only 30F :shock: ....few degrees below normal...

Good idea Adam, but when using the CFL bulbs (10000 H), im sure they wont burn during the winter. I change at least 1 bulb per year, just in case. But with 2 CFL, if 1 burn, ill still have another one plus the heatcable (64 watts) on the ground. That will give enough heat with 2 inches styrofoam box...

Yes, i know. i replaced it after taken this picture. The heat cable for pipe is better the one for roof has that problem. That s fried my Trachy too last winter. Now i used the heat cable EasyHeat for pipe, more better and they have their own thermostat .

Keith, If you protect your palms with a 2 inches styrofoam box, you need only a 12 foots cable (48 watts) on the ground for the roots. And a 18 foots cable (72 watts) for the trunck is enough. Me and Mike here in Montréal (im 30 km north of him) use only 2 x 23 watts cfl for heating the box and a 12...

Yes, But the temperature will go up tomorrow and for the next days, up to 16c friday :D ...but cooling down to the normal on monday :cry: ...Normally we got these lower temp. not before mid-november.
