Usually when the frost catches on plant in this way is high air humidity. Your Y.brevifolia have good genes.

great Sabals! I remember the pictures that you took at Tulsa ZOO from last year. Sabal minors were brown to the ground but full recovered .

Last winter in Novi Sad (Serbia) this one survived unprotected (close to building). Official low is -27 Celsius (-16.6 F) on 9.2.2012., but close to building is definitely warmer. Area around airport (Zagreb/Pleso) is closer to zone 7a, most parts of town is in zone 7b and mildest urban heat islands is 8a (Zagreb/Grič/Medvešćak, Srebrnjak etc.). After -20 last winter in outskirts of a city not all unprotected T. fortunei so happy. This one is not far from me...

Yes, they have lot of palm species: W. robusta, W. filifera, B. capitata. J. chilensis, L. chinensis, S. palmetto, S. minor etc. Sochi is 9a zone.
Olympic fields are more inland, on the mountains.

All three germinated, but only one is left. When is young it's easily rooted.

Most information about Soviet project I found in a good Russian book Saakov, S.G (1954), Palmy i ich kultura v SSSR, Moscow, Akad. Nauk SSSR, 1954.
