Looks good to me. You'll cover the top, right? top will be covered and at this point I think I'll shrink wrap it from top to bottom with a little venting to help moisture. I'm just getting sick of pulling heavy doors out of my shed. They take up a ton of space and the original ones are getting to t...

New idea for palm huts this winter.
I'm looking for some feedback on this idea. I took 55 gallon plastic drums, cut the top and bottom off and cut down top to bottom. I can essentially wrap the palm in drums, cap it, shrink wrap the seams and have a full enclosure with minimal effort. My question is how to handle the inside. It's pret...

Would you use a fungicide if you're going to have them somewhat snuggly wrapped with insulation? I'm debating less light and buy 5 rolls of insulation and just wrap them up like a candy cane. But I should probably cover with frost cloth before wrapping with the insulation right? If I don't do that I...

Just an update on my palms. My two oldest ones are putting up frond after frond and growing a tone this year. The three newest (the big ones I got last spring 2013) I think they are shocked still from this past winter (one of the coldest and longest I've ever known). They're putting up fronds but no...

The other tree's inflorescence is to the point where I could shake pollen out of it as well so it appears I have two males at this point.... Kinda sucks, was hoping to get some seeds this year! Hopefully my third big one next year will put out some inflorescence and it's female. I think my two small...

Well I went out there tonight and shook my tree and got what appeared to be some powder off of it, so it appears that that one is a male. I don't know if this will work but I went over to the other tree and tried to sprinkle as much powder as I could on that one's inflorescence. It's not as develope...

Sorry man. Sucks that it fried up. Living across the pond from you, I really think you should get styrofoam in there somehow. It will help lower your electric bill and also insulate the palm better. I can even see a big hole where the cord comes in. I bet your palm saw extended periods of temps bel...

Weather here is downright miserable, windchills to the low 20/teens, winds in the 20mph range and temps down to just below freezing. Really wish I left that box on now in hindsight. This winter will just not end where I'm at.... The fronds are looking quite worse for wear and even the spears are get...

Dang:( Sorry your palms took a hit...wishing you luck! Looks like some healthy green on some of those fronds, my guess is they'll be good as new soon:) There is still some green on them and the spears pushing out look good too yet, heck for all I know those may have pushed out while in the box... I...

Doug, did you have a remote thermometer inside there? It'd be good to know what the minimum was in the box. Yeah, mold is awful, but it can be managed to some degree. My Washy fronds that get black mold are simply cut off in spring, didn't seem to hurt either of them. Barb I did have a temp sensor ...

Doug, the box wasn't too big. But there should be insulation inside. Plywood alone isn't perfect for winter, especially if joints aren't caulked, etc. Styrofoam comes in panels in various thicknesses. You could measure and cut styro to fit each assembled box panel. An inch of styro would've meant a...

Well for the past three years I had no issues with simple wood boxes. I think a few things led to this result. I found out one of my strands of lights fuse blew so I had one of my largest boxes (around 10 foot) with only one strand of lights working. Another thing is this box is a stand alone with t...

Tonight I'll apparently hit -5c 23F the lows for the rest of the week are between between -4c 26F and -1c 30F. The days are getting too hot to leave the boxes on Tuesday will be 15c 60F I don't see the cold as much of an issue for a Trachy to handle. Just curious as I unboxed my big boy today to se...

Ugghh.... unboxing has begun...
Well, I got the itch to take one box off today. Tonight we're going to hit a low of 20, hope that doesn't stress the tree. Needless to say, I'm bumming after two years of great overwintering. I'm guessing my box was too big for the two strands of c9's I had in there. This is my biggest tree. Hopeful...

I plan on boxing for the foreseeable future. I have three that are 8-10 feet tall when the fronds are pulled up. Wishing I would have ordered smaller ones last year.... but I'll just keep getting taller and taller 2x4's and go as long as I can. I will be watching beny's videos though for the mummy w...

a little concerned about this as I wrapped the boxes in tarp, but there's no way I can even look inside with the cold and snow that's still outside. I can see the lights are still turning on and off and the temperature is around 5C. Tavi I wrap the top third of my boxes with some old plastic sheeti...

I'm keeping my hopes up that I'm not going to have any issues. All five of mine have full wood boxes that are not air tight. Two strings of c9 lights on thermocubes as well. I will say the lights have been on a ton this winter here in michigan, but other than that I think mine may come out in decent...

My remote thermometers stopped working this year but I have been keeping a keen eye on my boxes in my back yard, two are 3 x 3 by 7, two are 3 x 3 by 9 and one is 3 x 4 by 10. All have two strands of c9 lights in them and since this weather hit late sunday here in Michigan they've seen lows of under...

Cold Hardy citrus?
Was doing some googling this afternoon and saw that there's some citrus plants that can go down to 10F.... Has anyone in some of the cooler zones played around with plants like this? I see some oranges, limes, etc listed as being cold hardy. It's got me thinking what I could get away with in 5B/6A.....

I might be lucky with regards to where I am located (west michigan). We will get some thaws through the winter and with how I build my boxes (3 foot by 3 foot) I think the roots are able to get enough of the melt off that I have no had any issue with them looking like they needed water when I unboxe...
