Due to the warm winter, mine began growing and burst through their protection- a thick layer of mulch with pots on top of the stumps. The pots were being raised off the ground. So I unearthed them so to speak. But there have been a few remaining nights of frost. Rather than reshovel the mulch and al...

Any suggestions? We have very clay like soil here I dig the standard hole that is 2x bigger than the root ball. I then mix up a batch of soil that is 1/3 peat, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 mini pine bark chips. Then throw some of the clay and topsoil from the hole in for good measure. Both my Sikkim and Ba...

That is a lot of water. My soil is dominated by clay and I live in a small valley formed by a creek. So it is very wet as well, but not like yours. I would do what DesertZone recommends. Also, I sometimes dig the hole for a plant and then dig another hole at the bottom and fill it with gravel. This ...

grapefruit soaked in seawater............wow, that bad? We'll see what happens with the Citrumelo......most likely it won't survive here. Well, one bite and you realize why they are not available at your local fruit stand. I have heard Poncirus is really horrid. But, as Canadianplant says, t...

I never heard of Ichang Papeda..........worth a try? How hardy?? Changsha mandarin is dry? Dry does not sound very interesting. I wouldn't mind a very tart citrus like lemon.....it doesn't have to be sweet. I not sure if our growing season is long enough to produce citrus.....poncirus was 'ripe' in...

Hey Tim: Last Summer I planted 3 Citrumelos and 1 Thomasville outside. No protection other than a layer of mulch. They all came through fine. But...this was a very mild winter, so the jury is still out. I have a Morton Citrange in a pot that I may put out somewhere. Ichang Papedas would be good choi...

what about asking? Would not know who to ask and the risk of being labeled an eccentric crank is too much. More seriously, it belongs to our plant service. They rotate stuff in and out. Good specimens, but the Wollemi caught me by surprise as I was just reading everyone's comments on them he...

How long have they been in the ground? They will probably be fine, but if you want to eliminate all uncertainty, wait until 3/21 or soon thereafter. I did not cover mine at all this year, but they have been in the ground for 4 years now. They look fine, but I am going to wait to uncover the Butia, M...

I have yet to cover mine this year, but 3 of 4 have hit the 4 year mark and the last one has hit three years.

This post reminds me of Canadianplant's older post  Barb, pomegranates can indeed be trained as trees, and in warmer climates, that's likely how they would grow naturally. I am going to be working on bringing some of the hardier varieties over the border next fall. True. My Ortho book says the...

Jack what kind of protection did you give it? Nothing. Angel Red is a hardy variety. I stuck it in the ground in mid-March, weeks before the last frost. By June, I had two fruits. And it has not even been a year yet. Not meaning to brag  , but its one of the few exotics that is seemingly effo...

I bought an Angel Red pomegranate at a local nursery and planted it last March. It flowered and gave me two fruits. And you know what? They tasted good. I don't if they defoliate so much as they are decidious. Mine had great Fall colors. You can train them like a shrub or a tree. As for the main que...

I grabbed a small Eucalyptus cinerea at a nursery last June and put it in a pot. Of course, it grew and became very gangly. Rather than bring it in, I stuck it in the ground fully expecting its demise. It is still alive. Indeed, it does not have so much as a blemish on it. Probably the so-far mild W...

I have Yet to Protect my Trachys
Just some mulch. I have wrapped my Butia and Med, but not the Trachys.
I have been using nearly every weekend to paint my house. Solo. No help whatsoever. Consequently I have not had the energy to wrap them.
Am I out of my mind?

I think all this depends on whether these 2 make it through their first winter. I know with proper care they should be fine but since I'm new at this, i'm a bit more cautious. I think if they make it through ok, I will head south a bit and pick out another for the Southeast side of my house (unfort...

I actually recall one nursery that had no idea whatsoever that you could get palms for a 7A climate. I will keep your suggestion in mind about Norfolk if these 2 do well. I may end up getting another for other areas of my yard. One upon a time mine were that size. Feed them and baby them and you wi...
