This is a peculiar hobby....

To say the least.

Somewhere in Tonga, Samoa, or Hawaii, a bunch of eccentrics are trying to make their back yards look like the Yukon.

Interesting Erik. The local HD has the same lineup, with Sabal Minors being conspiculously absent. Meds are probably the most attractive of the hardies, but require the most protection. Needles and Trachys can, in theory, eventually stand alone. So, do you want more aethestics with more work or less...

Tim, I'll check soil pH. I assume I have dropped my pH with all the horse manure/pine shavings (horse bedding) I put down but don't know for sure. I know that other folks in town can grow Aucuba. They were a staple in Oregon where I grew up so I'd like at least one here. I also know mine get more s...

Very nice! My needles and minors down here at 35 oN don't look nearly so good. Phylostachyes aureosulcata is dead and being cut down all over the region (presumably will come back from roots). The Magnolia success doesn't surprise me--they are hardier than I once thought. Yucca? I guess I take it f...

Nice additions. Some yuccas putter along, some grow at near warp speed. There are lots of Magnolias here, some of them quite large. They are so common that I forget there might be hardiness issues. If its that costly and messy, and I do not doubt it is, why not just forgo all electrical components? You could just use leaf cages and be fine. Palms looking good.

For some really cheap tropical chic, go to the grocery store and load up on Taro Root. Stick em in the ground and what grows looks like a smaller, but more appealing Elephant's Ear. You could start them inside now.

Also, get some pineapples and plant the tops. Very tropical.
