Steve - you sent me a couple of the Kalanchoe, and they have grown like you wouldn't believe. They are under fluorescent lighting and have grown taller and fuller. I look forward to getting these outside in a month or so.

I gotta agree, your bustin' at the seams. Warm weather is not far away. It is amazing how the warmer sun by the windows and the longer days kind of pushes everything to grow. Just hold on a few more weeks.

stick your finger in the dirt down several inches, if its dry I'd water sparingly. no need to soak it, but don't let it dry out either.

how do you think you attach the PVC pipe top the bottom wood frame. I am envisioning some king of large bolt that screws up through the bottom of the frame and sticks up in maybe 6" or so and then you put the end of the pvc pipe over the top of the screw/bolt . But how do you hold the pvc down ...

I got a coconut palm for christmas. It's maybe 3' tall. keeping it under a grow spot light in the basement and it appears to be fine. I can hardly wait to sit it out in the springtime.

wes - I'd uncover the palm and be prepared to cover when temps dip. I think with it being wrapped it will get too hot and possible moldy if you allow it to heat up too much. Good luck.

I can't believe those palms are 7 years old. Talk about s l o w. I guess I'm impatient, but I might have given up on those things by now (probably not). By the time they get big enough to plant in ground, you will have forgotten what they are.

the bales of hay is a great idea, but I am going with some portable pre-made greenhouse structure. I have actually seen a greenhouse made of hay bales on some website. They had a whole pictorial on construction and such, it was pretty cool.

Kansas (Wes) - for what its worth I think your plan will work. The bottom line is that for maybe 1-2 weeks each year you will have to provide extra protection for those nights that get really cold.
