I just started some philodendron shoots in water last week for spring plantings. The leaves get huge in partial sun and I have them near my pond for a tropical look. Steve - read up on the Kalanchoe and it is apparently easy to propogate with cuttings. True? also -what color flowers can I expect fro...

Knnn - tried to get some styrofoam cups at the store last week and they said some guy in central Kansas has cornered the market on styrofoam in Kansas. By looking at you GH picture, I figured out it was YOU. Man just keeping all those seedlings watered must be a chore. I thought I had a lot of seedl...

tropicman - was just reading through this post again and saw you asked me a question in Jan 07 about an outside thermometer. I do have a wireless thermometer in my palm hut and the base units inside the house. It shows me the temp inside the hut and also keeps a record of the minimum and maximum for...

I can't wait to get some of these out of my house and basement and into the real sun. My wife is about to blow a gasket with all the palms inside...

wes - I'd leave it as is until warmer weather. I was in a large local greenhouse 2 weeks ago and asked if I could special order a larger Fortunei and/or Needle Palm. Well, the manager called me back a few days later and told me they could get a large Fortunei (7 gallons) for $159. I passed for obvio...

Steve - just saw your request for a picture last night - so here you go . My neighbor was in Miami FL on business and my wife talked him to bringing this palm back on the plane. It is currently puting out a new frond and appears to be doing OK under a grow spot light. http://i92.photobucket.com/albu...

Knnn - Hey whatever it takes. I stopped by the Dollar General store the other day to check out their garden planters and bought some fairly large planters for $4 each. I'd guess they are probably 7 gallon containers. Planters - yea good. I used a big tub like yours to plant a banana tree last year a...

Steve - your place is amazing. Everytime I see pictures I am surprised to see more stuff. Keep up the good work. I am getting antsy for spring. Moved abput 50 palms outside onto my patio on Monday to take advantage of the nice weather. Hopefully I can keep them out until next week by the looks of th...

oh yeah ..... heat
This is stating the obvious, but one of my New Years resolutions was to state the obvious more in 2007. Since I built my seed starting aparatus (2X4's with christmas lights) my seed germinating luck has sky rocketed. If you seed starters out here want to do one thing to increase your chances for ger...

Wes - congratulations on what sounds like an excellent opportunity. Cali-wana-b gave great advice. Make sure your wife is 100% behind your decision. You are probably going to have to sell her on the idea even if its only for a year or two. For what its worth, if you take the job (and I assume its mo...

Tropicman - I have thought about those and I have one we use for camping etc. I have thought about how I can enclose it for winter and have determined that a clear solar pool cover might be the ticket. Steve - the HFGH is still an option. I think I can make that work but I am not sure the 6X8 is big...

I don't have any more room for palms. I sure wish the temps would get nice so I can start moving stuff outside. My wife is getting grumpy because I got plants all over the house in front of the windows. I don't know how much more she can take. I may have to kick her out. LOL. I am definetly going to...

Kansas (Wes) - for what its worth I think your plan will work. The bottom line is that for maybe 1-2 weeks each year you will have to provide extra protection for those nights that get really cold. Other than that it will be a piece of cake. (power of positive thinking). Also - winter is almost over...

I'll try anything. If you told me I could germinate seeds faster by wrapping the seeds in the used underwear of a rodeo clown I'd hang around the locker room of a rodeo just waiting for my chance. Hell , if you told me I could germinate seeds faster by wrapping the seeds in a power towel soaked in d...

Steve - they don't sell stuff that cheap at my Walmart or Lowes. I may have to make a trip to Salina and get it all before you do. I was at Home Depot earlier this week and they really have some rough looking stuff and they have not marked it down yet. The have a majesty palm with 1 one frond (and o...
