oppalm knows this now and he is pleased. oppalm also enjoys referring to himself in the third. oppalm knows Butias are great palms and his life long dream is to grow enough of them to provide him and his wife with enough jelly to retire on. oppalm is not sure how much jelly that is, but a man has to...

Macario - you exposed me, the secret is out, I am anal retentive when it comes to my yard. I spend lots of time in the yard, but it keeps me off the street. I coached my sons baseball team for 10 years and my spring and summers were spent on or near a baseball field and now I enjoy the yard (is that...

very nice grove you got there Ben. I'll take as many banana plants as you want to give up. I'll trade you something. I bought a sampler set of banana seeds back in Jan 2007 and have 1 seed germinate out of about 50 seeds. I know that banana seed germination is eratic and slow, so we'll see how long ...

It currently has a couple of Wash Robustas and 2 bananas planted in it. I'd like the height there and it is a full sun spot. You are on the rig...

I agree with the bird of paradise in pic 1 and the majesty in pic 2. Help control spider mites by misting your plants every day or every couple of days and it does help to keep a fan on them for 6-10 hours a day. Put the fan on a timer and you never have to remenber. I use an oscillating fan that mo...

Artic palm - I used 2 - 100watt spot lights in a small outside A frame palm hut I built last winter. The hut was 4' X 9' and about 3' tall. The 2 spot lights put out enough heat to keep the inside of the hut 15-20 degrees warmer than the outside temps. I only used the lights on nights when temps wen...

I live in OP. There are a number of palm trees popping up around OP. A number of apartment complexes have the Wash Filifera and/or Wash Robusta in front. Also, a number of banks are using tropicals, including palms, in their entrance planting beds. I'll have to remember my camera as I drive around a...

Hey Steve - you amaze me with the seeds you germinate. You are the man (the seed sproutin' man). How's your place doing - you got lots of palms outside this time of year? I have a pretty good year going in my yard, I need to get some pictures posted. Got lots of rabbits this year for some reason, so...

It would definetly be good for a walk through. I too have a hard time over spending on any palm tree. I have lost (killed) my share of overpriced palm trees and that keeps me from digging deep in the wallet. I grow most of my palms from seed now, it takes patience but it's not like I have $699 inves...

Steve - Hope you are OK. We got lucky yesterday in that they were calling for rain and we did not get any. I live just south of Kansas City. Don - how many banana plants do you have? Do you keep them going all winter or do you dig them out and store them. I tried to overwinter some bananas this winter, dug them out and stored them in my basement and they dried out, I hope the corm is still good and can grow, we'll see. Keep up the good w...

I have a 7' queen palm that is still inside. Its too heavy to move in and out. I have several 2-6' Mex Fan Palm and they are outside and doing very well. sounds just like what I put up with at my house. I germinate a seed and I have a party i.e. high fives all around, jumping up and down, etc. However, the people in my house (my family) could care less. They complain about brown fornds, small bugs flying around (soil gnats) and high humididty levels....

The results were not even close. I kept the paper towel and baggie seeds on a computer monitor which provided...

lucky1 - the plastic tent over my Fortunei is big enough that the water is diverted away from the plant and far enough away that it drains away. I am still inclined to dig it up and plant a little higher just so I don't have to worry about the sometimes cold spring rains damaging or drowning the pla...
