Trithrinax brasiliensis

I was at Cistus nursery this afternoon, just browsing. They had a Sabal minor "OK collection" that made me both proud, and miffed. Why aren't these offered in Oklahoma! Most okies don't even know they have native palms. :x My prize was a Trithrinax brasiliensis. I'll plant it on the steep ...

W and I saw cacti blooming in south Texas in March.
My best plan? Move there!

I'll keep hoping for Sequoia. Here on the Oregon coast, I'm seeing some plants I thought dead coming back to life in the past week.

Tarchycarpus are all over the place.
Not a terrible winter here; low for winter was +12 oF, with a few days below freezing, back in early December. No big deal for a windmill palm and they are flowering all over the city.

Palmy Portland

I grew up in Portland, Oregon, a palmy city despite being at 46 oN latitude. This cell phone snapshot from today is of a McDonalds drive-through: <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/drterdal/14200632945" title="portland scenes by Erik Terdal, on Flickr"><img src="https://...

and last but not least: waggies! I have two Trachycarpus fortunei "wagnerianus" here. Both did just fine with lower zone 8 temps, as expected. As with Sabal minor, Trachy are the palms to go with if you might have zone 8 temps and cannot protect, even with mulch. <a href="https://www....

The survival of CIDP was not expected. It should be dead. Dead, and not at all surprising, is the Nikau palm. I had high hopes for this risky palm as it is native to a similar latitude (albeit S not N) in New Zealand, and also along the coast. But, definitely upper zone 9. <a href="https://www....

End of winter report from Manzanita OR after first zone 8 wi

I'm in the multi-year process of moving out of Oklahoma. In 2012 I drove some Waggies and a few other palms out to the Oregon coast and planted them at my parent's cabin on the Oregon coast. They did well with no protection at all, so a year ago I drove west with CIDP, sago cycads, Chameadorea radic...

US$100 Chammies

The parking-lot palm vendor I have bought so many palms from over the years, as has KrisK, has Chammies this year. But, asking US$100. I know he pays shipping (from Florida), but still, a lot of money. Any thoughts on the price for these? <iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/drterdal/1396...

Bottle palms, foxtail, etc. have been out for a couple of weeks now but I brought them in last evening. Good thing! We tied a record low for the date of 27 oF, with 8 hours below freezing.

I got one inexpensively (ok, free) and it has grown well for me, indoors all winter and outdoors when it is above freezing.
