The pic of what is thought of to be a Trachy looks to me to be mature Chinese fan palm with a trunk. Teebee did you get any seeds? Great pics.

Barb maybe they are both W. filfera. I thought one was a W. filibusta. I`ve noticed the trunks are diferent colours when the are young. The filifera is a dull orange colour while the robusta trunk is a brighter reddish colour. The fronds are a deeper green on robusta and duller olive color on filife...

Beny that is a really great looking Trachy. Nice stiff fronds on it. How much did you pay for that palm? That palm in Vancouver would easily be $700.00 and up.

Kent that`s great you got them to survive with only mulch. -18c 0f is pretty darn cold especially for the Chinese fan palm. Are you still just using mulch now they are that much bigger? I`m going to give a Chinese fan palm a try in the ground next spring after seeing what you`ve been able to do. John

Robocaesar. The basjoos in the 4th photo are huge . The photo was taken near my Grandma`s house in South Vancouver. They probably got fried in Dec. that year. Barb I put 8" of mulch on the ground around the filifera. I like your idea of having the lights on the ground. It could be serious fire hazard with dry leaf mulch though.

Barb with the fiberglass insulation I took about half of the 6" thickness and wound that on the trunk first then wrapped the C 9 lights and then finished with another wrap over the lights. I also wrapped the fronds with the fiberglass when it got cold in Jan.
