Hi Bill,

many of the sedimentary rocks around RI and SE Mass are from the Pennsylvanian age and date back to 300 MY. Mostly leaf fossils that look like mimosa leaves. Still cool to find them.

300 MYO fossils in Rhode Island

the only fossils I've found up here are 300 year old tree leaves. I have a bunch in my garden.

I just got back from a mini vacation in New Hampshire. Thanks to all for the nice comments.

Duncan& others, I have some seeds I can send you from some hybrids. You can plant many and select the 'hardiest' forms. You'll have to give me your mailing address.

Nice Yucca for zone 5b!! I agree with Duncan.....your 'rostrata' does not appear to be 'typical'. My gut was telling me it's a Yucca linearfolia which looks very closely like a Y. rostrata. Does your 'rostrata' have a serrated leaf edge?

Hi Duncan, nice Yuccas! Those Yuccas you just purchased sure look more like elata than glauca. What does everyone else think? Can you find out where the Yuccas or seed was from (State, county)? All those filaments are a classic way to ID Y. elata. I'm sure some forms of Y. glauca can form many filam...

Hi Barb, your too funny! (I'd have more luck growing rocks). I'd get those Yuccas in the ground in your sunniest position.....and water them every few days from May through August. If your temps remain warmer than -22C (dry climate) you'll be able to grow most Yuccas native to the USA. Only Y. whipp...

Hi Barb, I'm not familiar with Canadian climate zones.....USDA 6b has an average low of 0F to -5F (-17.8C to -20.6C). Are you much colder than that? If your dry, you can probably grow some of the southwest trunkers like Y. elata, Y. schottii, Y. faxoniana, Y. thompsoniana, Y. rostrata, and perhaps Y...

Hi Barb, I'm in USDA zone 6b....is that the same as Canandian zone 5b? If so, we are in similar climates. We get a lot of precipitation (about 4 inches or 10 cm) per month, every month of the year. Yuccas (bigger specimens...not seedlings) which I've tried and didn't survive include: Yucca aloifolia...

thanks for posting that photo of your 'rostrata'. That's not a typical rostrata. Those leaves are really wide, appear more rigid, and have a 'U' shape to them. I'd say it's closer to a Y. rigida than a Y. rostrata. Temperature data can help us ID it as well since rigida is a solid USDA 8 plant where...

cool looking Y. rostrata........

Nice looking, wide leaved form of Yucca rostrata. Do you have a photo of it prior to the damage? Your form appears to have very wide leaves......perhaps the rostrata x rigida form? How cold did you get?

Yuccas seem to grow well in my climate and I don't fertilize them unless they are containerized. Give it a try and let us know the results!

I'd cut the old bloom stalk off unless you like the look. I try not to cut off marginally hardy Yucca bloom stalks since moisture may drain into cut stalk area and cause winter damage.

Hi From Massachusetts, USA

Hello to all,

I like to grow Yuccas and other subtropical plants in my garden. I like palms but they require protection in our USDA zone 6B climate. Lets talk plants!
