I used steel fence posts, but 3 of 'em, and just sat them on the ground, tied at the top like a teepee.

Saves on sparks.

Steel fence posts driven into the ground
Our ground is really rocky (shale); yours must be nice soil.

Yes I've used fencing wire too; not so good in heavy snowloads.

The styrofoam barrel would be fast to set up...nice and wide and good height for a few years anyway.

Yeah, not surprised it adhered. One Fall after erecting the big palm hut, I noticed slivers of daylight at the joined sections. Armed with a spray foam can, I sprayed every inch along fitted and screwed panels, The carpenter, next spring, had to use one of those huge heavy hammers to get the panels ...

I like that styro formed barrel idea, Scott. Except for the rolling pin part  If preformed styro "barrels" aren't available, wonder if Sonotube makes larger sizes than currently. Expensive though, 12" diameter was $129 at Menard's. We Canadians pay nearly $9 for spray on foam can...

We hit -21C (if I recall correctly) once or twice in November and -19C in December. Seldom above zero, even when close to it. But the day 2 feet of snow arrived all at once, I think, suffocated everything, breaking the little Euro's stem. No big deal, I have more  Jim, yeah that Princeps will b...

Yeah, downsizing...certainly holds appeal. Your cactus area is spectacular, will be good to have it exposed to some breezes with the ends open. And seeing those palms opened up will be exciting. Princeps is one of my favs. A shame you've got spear damage on the B.armata. Hope it bounces back with re...

Me too, Jim, I ran out of lights and materials to cover. Basically said Sayonara in Fall when I last walked past them. And frankly, loving the look of feather and palmate-leafed palms as I do, there was no longer any appeal for me with Needles. Mine looked like a bag of crap when I gave it to John. ...

I can never figure out how deeply to stick the cuttings into the soil.

Yeah, you can see the buds.
Have you got a nice dry-ish spot for them, say, under an overhang, or a high spot in the yard?

Interesting comments, Phil. Certainly food for thought. Could there be different "generations" of CFLs. After my family room CFL's have been on for, say, 5 hours in the evening, their surface isn't warm to the touch. Wouldn't hurt a fly landing on them. But I suppose in an enclosure (versu...

Thank goodness you used CFLs, which produce almost zero heat. Otherwise would've been some leaf burn from fronds touching the bulbs at the top. Wouldn't work here, need incandescents for heat, activated via thermocube. Reminder to self: use OUTDOOR incandescent strings, so bulbs don't fail. :? Barb

The 3 rostratas are approx 4 feet apart, and 2 feet from the house.
5 feet and 4 feet would've been a bit smarter as the "pineapple" bases have grown to 1 foot across.
