Bamboo all over the continent is getting hammered this year. If it took -9F and you didnt have full defoliation thats pretty amazing. There are only a few bamboo that can take that as well as yours seems to have taken it. A few Fargesia (Nitidia, Maurielae), some Phyllostachys (maybe areosulcata, vi...

Hey Mike.... You ever get those bamboo Identified? What were the lows? You might just have defoliation. You can look at the nodes between the branches and see if the buds are viable. Exactly like trees. Best to wait untill it warms up. Its possible you have some tip/top kill. That doesnt mean anythi...

Nanus only gets hardy when it gets larger. It has a large subterranian trunk. IT grows slow as molases though.... It is indeed a gorgeous palm. I think the benefits of trying it over a t fortunei is that they stay small and should be easy to protect ( at least comparing it to a larger palm like t fo...

Crooked Basjoo plant and corm
I planted my Basjoo this year and within a week or 2 I realized I didnt plant it deep enough in the pot or the soil finally settled. Either way, I had to bury it a bit deeper in soil. What seemed to have happened is that the plant ended up leaning having half the corm buried deep and half of it some...

Aristolochia anyone?
Just wondering if anyone on here has grown any of the aristolochia species, namely A macrophyllia and durior. These guys are native to NE North america, yet have families down all the way to mexico, which lots of people in the north grow as an annual. The northern types dont have the large visually ...

New Bamboos !!
Just received 2 new bamboo. One is a 2nd gen seedling of Fargesia Nitida, the other is a large rhizome cutting from a relatively rare bamboo Phyllostachys Parvifolia. Touted as a large hardy timber bamboo for "cold climates". Culms are said to take around -20C or more. The roots are as har...

Seeds arent the problem getting into canada as far as I know, its plants, especially in soil. Thanks for the input. I did read over and over about their ability to regenerate from roots. I do have the bonus of usually having a very deep snow pack, and also mulch almost everything I grow, just in cas...

Albizia julibrissin anyone?
Off and on I find some information about this tree saying they survive reliably in zone 6, but the roots can survive zone 5 or lower with a deep snow pack or good protection of a stump. Has anyone here tried these? They seem to be all over the east coast of the US.

Amazing tim. I cant get my EEs to get any size when they get in the ground. You know how big the corms are? I remember those papaya in april..... I had no idea that they grow quite that fast. They look to be pushing 3 feet? You grew these from a store bought fruit right? At first ight those magnolia...
