Erik Don't give up on it! I've had "pups" bigger than the one you have that lived without any roots for months before starting to grow new ones. Apparently the cycads can survive for quite a long time on food stored in the trunk. I've had many that I thought were ready for the trash heap a...

I've never seen anything in my 40 years of growing them like that! My pindos have experienced the fringes of Hugo (80-90 mph) with no damage. I have had squirrels do some freaky things in my yard. Any evidence of chew marks?

Erik Barb mentioned that sagos are tempermental and heres a good example. I have about 10 "pups" that I recently pooted up in 1 g containers recently. They all had great root systems and were doing great in a fairly shaded location. I decided to move them to a partially-shaded spot to slow...

Most of the palm species in my area (pindos, windmills, palmettos) are literally swarmed by bees and flies during flowering stages. However, when needle palms are flowering I never ...

Erik Yeh, I guess that's why they call them the "Great Plains"! I think us people in the East take our trees for granted sometimes. Here in S.C. it's a perpetual battle to keep trees and shrubs from not taking over our yards. We would convert back to woodland in about 10 years if we left o...

Planting near buildings (south and east facing) is usually the first think we think about, but planting near or under vegetation canopy is often overlooked (especially evergreens). I would think in your area you could treat it as a perienial. You would probrably lose most of the topside growth each winter but summers in your area are pretty warm and regrowth would be quick. Oleanders are quick growers if root systems are well established. Even here in S.C. there can be winter ...

Sabal minors are also commonly found here in S.C. from the coast up to 160 miles inland. However, try to find one in a nursery! Won't happen! I think the problem is that they are so slow growing that it is not economically feasable to grow them for market. Because they are not available, you don't s...
