I've been germinating a few more species recently. I now have around 20 large Jubaea seedlings that have emerged, and hopefully more to come. I've also received 16 types of hardy citrus, and have germinated at least a dozen types so far. Some other species of tree fern have finally started to sprout...

Paul, this is an interesting report. Halifax had an awful winter, and I also lost several plants (most likely including the S. minor "McCurtain" that you gave me). I've put this down to the fact that I just covered everything with hay this year rather than the usual mulch. The hay seems to...

I found that de-lidding Jubaeas, while providing incredibly fast germination, also provides incredible opportunities for mold to take over. Even after boiling water and pouring it over the soil to sterilize it first, I still lost every de-lidded Jubaea seed that I planted. They seem to be much more ...

I'm sitting in my living room looking at what seems to be another sudden freeze after a short thaw in the GTA. Ontario is surely not a nice home for outdoor palm trees. I'm so tired of snow, ice and cold. Winter can be fun for the holidays but here it can snow well into April. I looked up Sechelt o...

The Halifax area ended up with around 1.5' (45 cm) or so, but luckily it wasn't the heavy, wet snow that much of the NE US received. Still, it's piled up everywhere! This winter has been pure hell for me.

I tend to bury all of my palm seeds, and only half-bury cycad seeds. Like you said, Barb, cycads seem to cope better even when they're pushing themselves off of the soil surface!
