My area has not had much snow so far - only a couple of dustings. Temps have hit -10 C for lows twice, and I still haven't protected my plants! Hopefully I can accomplish that this week.

Tim, you should treat A. ecklonis as a die-back perennial, since it's a "grass Aloe". Let it die back to the ground, and provide some protection (i. e. mulch). It should resprout in the spring/summer.

I ended up losing 3 out of 4 of my loquats through the past winter. The only one which survived was planted in dappled shade. I used hay as a protection method last winter, and it turned out to be some of the worst material that I've tried so far.

I also had a few "Helen's Hybrid" seedling die, and this was the only survivor. The orchids are doing well; I kept two Phalaenopsis sp. amabilis, and they've at least doubled in size since I got them.

The A. gigantea fared pretty well for its first winter. It was protected with some hay, but the top of the plant was still exposed to temps of -20 C. There are some burnt leaves, but there are also some green ones.
