Barb, I had this happen a couple of times. I would keep more soil over the seeds, and keep the soil a little less moist (unless you had just watered it before the photo) in the future!

As Andy and Steve both mentioned, the hardiest queen palms that I have heard of are from the Santa Catarina locale, and the "Silver Queens" were hardier-than-average queen palms from Florida.

Unless you're planning on using heat or a massive pile of mulch/leaves, in most cases a L. chinensis (Chinese Fan Palm) would likely not survive. If you're also looking for shade-tolerant plants, you should consider Aucuba.

Tim, I've also been doing some more research on A. ecklonis recently. It seems as if some of the hardier grass Aloes actually die back during the winter, and regrow during the spring. So maybe the foliage damage is just superficial!

Keith, if you are as forgetful as I am, you'll avoid the baggie or container method

These sealed environments are fantastic if you can remember to air them out every few days, but can be prone to mold if you forget. A water-bleach solution can definitely help though.

Tim, from my experience, Citrus seeds don't need too much heat to germinate. The problem seems to be viability and/or mold on the seeds.

Great work, Igor! There are a few more zone 6 hardy selections which have recently been developed in the states. But you're right about bringing EEs indoors; while I do keep an Alocasia indoors over the winter, it grows taller but thinner compared to the robust growth of the summer season outdoors.
