Hey- I am in Maryland 7A as well. I have had Trachies for going on 10 years now. Mine are always heavily mulched. I then built leaf cages around them using plastic mesh. I did not tie the fonds, but rather wended the leaves around them so they would be supported and covered. Also used a bit of burlap...

jacklord, How cold did it ever get for you last winter? and was there any extra insulation besides the panes? Scott It hit the teens a number of times and of course we had Snowmageddon. Once or twice, I may have thrown a painters tarp over it. Other than that, no extra insulation. I used a 100w bul...

Interesting. Except when our former neighbors got a bit edgy about the protection cages (they were selling their house), nobody even notices my palms. A contractor was by on Saturday to give me a siding removal estimate. Stood right next to my Butia and never even glanced. If its an internet based b...

Jack, I was doing some reading on this before. It seemed as if you've got to wait until they are medium/dark brown in colour. People just seem to pull them off in bunches! I'm sure you already know to wear gloves when picking them  Actually, I did not know that. Presently they are in so...

When and How to Harvest Seeds?
One of my Needle Palms has a huge lot of seeds. Can anyone tell me when and how I can extract them?

I would do as Jim advises and just grab some Carl Pool off of eBay. I had been using Palm Tone, which actually is available around here. But I wanted to try something different and I found the CP on the Bay. As for protection, there are numerous good ideas around here. Or you could go to GardenWeb a...

What is this madness? That is a nice spread. And it has tropical plants. Hell, I am surprised you did not put up some Eucs. Do you have to leave? Anyway, I would dig up what you can. Obviously, the larger the palm, the tougher to get out. I dug my first three Trachys up. But I only had to mo...

Are palms ok planted next to a house? Good question. I hope so. My Butia is next to the house or rather the house is next to it as its getting bigger. I was in California once and saw where a date palm looked to be growing right out of a house foundation. The house seemed no worse for wear. My late...

Gott im Himmel! That yard looks incredible!. I am never going to post any pics of my spread. I cannot compete with that. No way, no how. I have to have one of those variegated bananas. Holy Smokes! Bill/Erik-- Curious as to what they are complaining about. Is it the vegetation itself or, at ...

I've never watered figs when they're estabished unless there is a month or so without rainwater. I could see however why one woruld want to do so with smaller trees Indeed. Both his and mine are new. And mine is in a container which made it very vulnerable to the first heatwave this year. Now it ge...

Should do fine. If I, a fig novice through and through, can offer one tip, that would be to give the fig enough water. Figs love the sun, but the leaves will yellow and drop if they do not get enough water. What are you going to use for fertilizer? Unlikely the fig likes much of water. Look at thee...

I am a recent convert to figs. Never thought much about them although I always enjoyed eating fig newtons. Then my boss started bringing in figs she grows in her yard. She wrapped them in burlap for a couple of winters but now does nothing. I bought a Brown Turkey in March but am keeping it in a con...

Good for you! :D I have had a potted Yuzu for about a year now. It just sat there and did nothing, neither grow nor die. Lo and behold, it flowered late winter. Now its flowering like crazy, flushing, and there are about 7 Yuzus hanging on it. I was going to plant it outside, but am balking. I look ...

I guess it depends. It always depends... I have three in the ground. 2 were protected during the winter and look a bit ragged, although nothing like those in the picture, which I might point out are very brown. The other has done two winters unprotected at the the most southern part of my yar...
