they encase the palms in glass when it gets cold. They must as these are right out of Tahaiti. oooooh...to see a picture of that would be lovely! Barb Better yet, go there for a visit. It really off the beaten track as Europe goes. Check out Google/Maps of the place. The Old Town is actually an enc...

I was also lucky to live in Germany - Dusseldorf - for a year, about 10 years ago. THere was no snow whatsoever throughout the whole winter, but a lot of rain. When I went to the local botanical gardens, I almost fainted seeing Eucalytpuses outside!!! They were E. gunnii, about 5 m tall, still with...

<Bump> This older thread caught my eye. I lived in Heidelberg, Germany for a year back in the mid 90s. The town is located along the banks of a river with small mountains on either side. Just above the base of one of the mountains, I discovered a group of 10 foot Trachys growing. I was shocked to sa...

Hey Jova: I am in 7b, although being 3 hours north of Virginia Beach, it is colder. I planted a Pindo last Spring on the south side of the house near the brick wall. A better spot within L'Etat Lord would be hard to find. I protected it over the winter with a caged filled with leaves. I think I did ...

Thanks for the comments guys. I can't wait until the sylvestris is 10 feet tall. That will be a sight. My street doesn't have much traffic, so I don't get a lot of people stopping and unfortunately no one else is growing palms in the neighborhood. I like it. Could almost be a neighborhood in Los An...

Re: front yard palm huts
Ah, the Mrs. My Butia hut was in the backyard. The Mrs. loves showing the Butia off to her friends in the Summer when it looks fabulous. She was happy to hide the plastic monstrosity my 10-year-old and I made with scrap materials for about US$0. For a palm hut in the front yard, you might have to w...

Jack, have you seen pictures of the cheap palm hut I made for my large Butia (the one pictured with the dog)? I used scrap wood and plastic, so it cost almost nothing to make, and yet the results, as you see, are impressive for a first-winter. --Erik Indeed yes. However, the towels obstruct the act...

In my experience, you can transplant almost anything- provided you do it carefully. Three of my four Trachys are transplants. I originally planted them in my parents' yard as I was then an apartment dweller. I purchased a house and I moved one right off the bat, then two more last year. The first is...

Hello from Maryland
Hi,
Great site. I live in Maryland just outside DC. I have been experimenting with hardy palms since 2002 and presently have 5 types growing in the garden. There are 10 in total and have not lost one yet.
Look forward to learning more. Thanks.
