I have loads of mad schemes for the Spring. I will most likely complete the palmscape by acquiring some Saw Palmettos. Last year's mail order specimen showed up distressed and croaked. Same with the Mazari I bought, so I may try for another one of those as well. I have to complete the Japanese Garde...

Since when is bad for a tree to get wet? They live outside. I think its a matter of how much prolonged exposure to excessive moisture, particularly in the crown area. Yes, most plants get wet outside, but the water soon flows/drains away. If not, the consequences can be negative.Try planting a cact...

Ok that article was a little more than my brain can comprehend at the moment. The question still remains though. They say soil born pathogens. Like I even know what that is. How did these pathogens get in the soil in the first place? Why dont they cause rot in other plants that are planted less tha...

chill on the other side the other side of what? the basement furnace? How's the light there? any cold drafts from garage door? In my home in winter, my Chinese Fan Palm prefers (in order): (1) bright light no more than 3-4 feet away from east or south window (west is OK), north isn't bright enough ...

Charles, my Chinese fan is in the cold barely-heated building, about 50F. The sunporch freezes? They don't mind being crammed into a livingroom corner with all their leaves bunched up pointing at the ceiling and a sofa shoved up against them! Barb No, its just home to my Norfolk Island Pine, 5 citr...

Scott, very nice! I think I'll plant a Magnolia where that bead Butia was. Shouldn't need protection down here. I took a chance and planted three burford hollies in Autumn. They're not getting any protection. The neighbors oleander? Let us know. An annual bedding plant, I assume. --Erik I doubt you...

Hey Jim, Man does the greenhouse hold the heat good, after the sunny day two days ago the temps when up in there and stayed up for a long time after the sun went down. Yesterday the sun was out for maybe 45 mins. all day and it was easily 15-20f warmer then outside. All the palms packed in there ar...

I'm pretty sure Gary Hollar told me last year they found some sabal minors in So. Virginia on some island. Like Erik said it's much more temperate then Oklahoma's natives thanks to the Ocean. Bill I would not doubt it. That small corner of Virginia is virtually subtropical or at least more like coa...

Jack, my brother was having lots of problems with spear pull with trachys. The ones which are moisture protected sail through winter with no problem. Perhaps you started with larger specimens? Also, my brother says the city temps are far warmer than where he lives in Fairfax. Also, his palms not re...

Hi Erik, My brother has tried lots of palms (mostly smaller in size 1 to 5 gallon to start with....even smaller 2yr old liners). The only palms which survived with no deaths and no protection were Sabal minor and Needle palm. Everything else has issues, needs protection or is dead. I know he killed...

Re leaves, Charles: By the time all our leaves are off, and raked, they're so wet I place them only around the exterior base of the palm hut to a height of about a foot. Then they freeze solid. I hear you. Our county requires that leaves be put in paper bags for recycling or swept into piles which ...

Hay is easy--you can get it delivered (photo). I had six bales dropped of yesterday. :D Charles, my avatar Butia has not had heat any of its four winters but it is pretty much defoliated every winter despite hay and cover. It recovers well in our Summer heat. Last year, I used pipe heating cable on...

I like Bill's idea about using the freezer. No, they don't need special outlets or anything. I bought two in case one goes bad--does anyone know the defect rate on thermocubes? I checked the reviews on Amazon and most were positive. But there were a few who said they did not work. The thing is, the...

I wouldn't bother with the adapter as it will only cause you problems. As long as your outlet is off the ground so it doesn't get wet you'll be fine. I bet your cube is fine too, stick it in the freezer for 5 minutes and then plug it in I bet it will work like a charm    Thank You At...

stuff it with leaves or straw Sheesh, I'd have to find a hay farmer, and appoint him Husband #2. If I were in a zone 7, I wouldn't even think of heating it, Charles. Alas... Only the Butia is getting heat. I wanted to spoil it because last year's leaf cage became very wet and reeked havoc on ...
