Wheelman, I've been getting great ideas too for my first wintering of a windmill palm. Hardyjim to me has the best simplest idea so far. It's easy, not expensive, allows for some light to get in, and best of all access through the top to check on things over the winter and on nice days give the plan...

Hardyjim, great pics of how you overiwinter. Do you fill the snow fence with leaves? or encase it with something? I'm new, and going to try and over winter 1-small(1ft) seedling in wire, filled with shredded leaves, and the other (about 2 1/2ft) tall in insulated, 1x1 enclosure I have yet to build a...

Will keep that in mind. About to go out and buy my greenhouse and get it up before winter sets in. I will put a wireless thermometer in it and watch temps over the winter. I've heard of others that put a bucket of water in the green house FOR moisture, but after reading about your experience will ho...

Lady Palm? opinions
Have done a search, but didn't come up with anything specific. I've read what on the net about lady palms, and have always wanted one so looking for personal experience stories. I suppose no chance to over winter one outside in my zone 6 area. Same nursery that had them, also had some nice Pygmy Dat...

OPPALM Going to do the same thing with my baby windmill I planted in the ground. One of 4 I bought(others are in pots) One in the ground did noticeably better in growth vs the potted ones(all same dirt too) I put wire enclosure around it when planted(keep out rabbits) and will line the outside with ...

No, it's not needed for the tape, but plan on also putting in the structure a small bulb in reflective hood. Saw them at Menards today. Clamp on reflective hoods for under $6. They even have mini halogen lamps for under $10, but they are 250watts. A bit too much heat I would think for a enclosed str...

Greenhouses?
Does anyone here in the forums, zone 6 or colder have a green house of any kind that you use to over winter your palms and other tropicals? Thinking about getting one of those 6x8..or larger green houses since I have a nice concrete pad to put it on. Just curious if other members have green house ty...

Yes, the thought of winter protection for the ones we/I leave out(my first season with cold hardy palms) and the monumental effort to bring the others in the garage for the winter. I may just have to arrange them nicely in the garage to make it feel like my winter paradise! Still, I don't think of a...

I will add mulch as the dirt settles around the base. I just planted it last night and I know it will settle. I will add mulch, and for winter will surround it with leaves and what ever winter protection I decide to put over it. Right now I'm thinking about those 55gallon plastic barrels? We have a ...

Yea I'm starting to get into trouble with my wife as I scour the end of season sales at nursery's. I travel in my job to get to check out a lot of nursery's away from where I live. Just bought a Super Dwarf Cavendish banana plant just today! I also have my eye on a European Palm at 60% off from the ...

Hardy Jim. Found a real nice sized Windmill palm at a Earl May garden center at 50% off ($24) I'm going to plant it in the ground on south side of garage and provide winter protection of some kind as an experiment. It's decent enough size, and still not too big to build something over it. I love the...

I just hate to experiment with such nice big palms. I would be crushed if I lost one the very first year. My thinking was if I put one..or both big ones in the ground in the spring they would have a chance to spread their roots out some and get used to the different soil and stand a better chance. I...

Winter protection pics.........
I for one as a newbie..would love to see winter protection pics in one thread. I bought two larger palms that I replanted in larger pots. Didn't want to put them in the ground in middle of summer, so will bring them in garage for the winter, and plant them in the spring. In the mean time, I have a l...

Yucca question
This may be a stupid question, but still a newbie to Yuccas and Palms.
Is a Rostrata and Blue Beaked Yucca the same thing?
