WOW. I did the slide show presentation. thats an impressive display of palm hoarding. No wonder the cost of palm trees is so high, you control the entire market. very very nice job and lots of work to be sure. Thanks for the pics.

I've had a few live but most of them shrivel up and die. Yours has a spear emerging so you'll probably be ok. Don't give up on them though. If all the leaves dry out , cut them off, and maintain the plant as usual, water, keep in sunlight etc. I have had more than one regrow , albeit very slowly.

I've had a couple of sabal minors that have done the same thing with the outer fronds/leaves. I think when they are young they are prone to drying out. Yours looks OK. You could always dry the leaves out and smoke 'em ..... if you know what I mean?

Wes, your zamia and yucca collection looks great. Your plants are really getting big. I have a few zamia's, but they kind of take a back seat to my palm and tropical plants. Palms and evergreens can co-exist. a nice balance can be achieved by planting palms everywhere you have a spot

The last one I bought in 2007 was from Harbor Freight. Bought it online for like $50. It pushes about 1300 gallons per hour. You can see them online. I'd leave the boots on also, but then again, I cover all my outdoor stuff in winter. With the boots on, they will capture and store cold rain, ice and snow against the crown shaft. Depends on how nasty your winters can be.

Nicely done. I am growing a couple of sabal minors in ground in my zone 6 garden so I share your enthusiasm. Mine are doing great also, but I cover mine with leaves (in winter) and plastic to keep the rain/snow/ice out. Keep up the good work, maybe you can create a super cold hardy variety of s minor.

nice work, looks like you have some nice sized plants to care for. BTW - nice tractor, makes diggin' holes for big wahy's much easier. Those washy's are of good size. will you need to protect those in your zone? or just let them go and see what survives.

everything appears to be doing well so far this year. Finally starting to get some decent size of some of my palms. Not sure if thats good because they get more difficult to store inside each year they get larger.

How about you, how is the palm ranch in central Kansas?

hey Steve, not sure whats going on there, but that picture is creepy looking. Looks like there is a finger sticking out of the dirt and you can see just the finger nail. Are you using chopped up fingers as fertilizer?

well John, as they say in the business, "live and learn". I am really trying to grow my stuff with no heat provided and mulching (lots of it) has worked for me the last 2 years. mulching is easy.

thanks for the atta boy. i had two other Fortuneis that were covered with a 12' circle of leaf mulch, with a teepee over the top that was open on the sides. They look OK but not nearly as good as these. I'll dig up the pics of these and post.

On April 12, 2009 , I uncovered my little palms trees as described in post #1 on this thread. My camera is not great and does not do the little palm warriors justice , but they came through winter in excellent shape. we had a handful of nights near zero (0F), but of course the little palms were cove...

Kick start early Wes. Good luck. Our weather looks good for at least 10 days out. I have had 100's of palms and cycads (cold hardy stuff) under my covered patio for weeks. Gettin' an early start.
I'll either cover it or bring it in if it gets too cold.

ahhhh spring. I have tried orchids but just can't keep them alive over winter. I give up on them too easily.

I wonder if we (zone pushers) would have any problems with scale because our plants are not going to be exposed to others with problems and our winters are going to kill spores, etc. I realize the plant could be sold with scale and we would then bring it into our homes and the scale could damage oth...
