How do you keep the GH cool? Exhaust fans, circulation fans, and misters. The misters work fairly well, usually get about a 10F drop from ambient. the downside is these are only good for intermittent use. After 3-4 weeks of continuous use, the mineral build of the foliage is getting quite heavy. Th...

Jody, That's a great looking Zamia, thanks for the photos! Wish I had the conditions to replicate those results :D You're right about fast growth, I've found deep containers useful. This Sago was a Wal-Mart special about 4 years ago. It spent the first year or two filling the container with roots an...

Cameron, Thanks! 3 known females and 2 males with this lot. Slowly trying to build up a breeding colony. Barb, Wish they had at least some roots! Guess I felt sorry for them, and the price was right :D With these, the top of the caudex is usually at the soil line or slightly above. Planted some high...

Some Zamia floridana that recently arrived. These were reportedly collected under permit 15-20 years ago, (a nursery now cleaning out stock), The wounds have calloused over and been treated. So hopefully these will root in and start growing. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2619/5816241183_a20a1e48e1_...

Barb, This is all new to me too, I think something is happening, not sure what :D Jody, I noticed as the cone became fully receptive it opened on the top and bottom. Seemed like an open invitation for pollinators to crawl through. Had a little bit of pollen left over that I did mix with water and in...

Just a follow up................... The weather turned cold after the cone emerged, and it was at least another 6-8 weeks before it became receptive. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5150/5597064028_9e8b21dc5b_z.jpg Thanks to Jody for sending me pollen! Barb, When overwintering in the house mine would drop all their leaves until they were back outside. Cameron, Thanks, maybe you were thinking of Corypha? B. aethiopum is dioecious. Flowering and fruiting take place whole year round. Pollination is largely done by insects. Elephants are fond of the fruit and are reputed to help in dispersing the seed. http://www.worldagroforestry.org/sea/Products/AF...
