peep hole update. I used the cardboard roll from wrapping paper and covered it with a clear plastic bag, cut a hole in the tarp and slipped in between the insulation and pointed it toward the house. I can stand in the kitchen and see if the light is on inside the hut. tested it and it works. our fir...

very observant of you Barb. can't slip anything past you. yes I have four 1 X 2's spaced across the top under the insulation to hold up the insulation. Just didn't take a picture of it. the insulation is cut a little on the side so I can pull the tarp up and peak at my palm trees anytime I want. My ...

Next up is the hut covered in a plastic tarp. Of course this is a work in progress. I am hopeful I can keep the inside of the hut above 10F when our temps drop to near 0F. I have a remote thermometer inside the hut so I can monitor the temps. We have not dropped below 0F the last 3 years and I am ho...

Winter protection - zone 6
I finished up one of my winter palm huts this weekend and thought I'd show you my plans. I am covering a Trachycarpus Fortunei (this will be its third winter in ground) and 2 small sabal minors (also in ground for 3 years). Previously all three of the palms were overwintered under 2' of leaves with ...

welcome personalparadise (extending secret Kansas handshake). Garden City is along way from me, I live near Kansas City on the eastern border of the state. I grow several cold hardy palms outside (all with protection) and have an abundance of indoor palms also. Welcome back to Kansas , we like to se...

Thanks for the comments. we are a little retentive (if you know what i mean) at our house. My wife has to have a place for everything. I bring them inside and she spends days looking them over arranging and rearranging etc. I only have about a dozen palms that stay in the main house the rest spend t...

On the left, in front of the window is a picture of my Livistonia Chinensis (Chinese Fan Palm) 3 years old that I started from seed. In the middle is a Chamaedorea Cataractarum (Cat Palm) and on the right is a Phoenix Roebelinni (Pygmy Date Palm). I've had the Cat Palm for 2 years and the PDP since ...

Palms Indoors for winter
Here are some updated pictures of a few palm trees that will be spending winter in the balmy confines of our home. The palms get bigger each year and take up more space. Here is my Wodyetia Bifurcata (Fox Tail Palm). I bought this bad boy in August 2006 and it was about 4 foot tall, it now stands ab...

they do grow very fast for a plam tree. I have one that I purchased as maybe a three footer (about the size of my pic) and three and half years later its over 7' tall. Very nice growth. I keep the younger ones in a protected area, they get summer sun from about 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The big one gets ...

double gulps are awesome. whats that? 64 ounces of your favorite beverage. now if you could just get 2 chili cheese dogs and a super big gulp for (USD) $1.99 you'd have lunch taken care of. Your foxtails look great. I've said this before, but this weekend I'l post a pic of young foxtail I have growi...

Jim you got it going' on , don't you. That looks like alot of work and you are to be commended for your efforts to bring the tropics to Iowa. Best of luck to you and your plants and I hope your remaining winter is a mild one. I am always surprrsed how cold hardy some of the stuff is, with a little l...

good luck Barb. My guess is that you will have to wait until springtime to assess the damage, if any. Don't go around tugging on spears just yet. This is my third winter with stuff planted outside and I am feeling much better having been through two winters wondering how everything is doing (fortune...
