The pic of what is thought of to be a Trachy looks to me to be mature Chinese fan palm with a trunk. Teebee did you get any seeds? Great pics.

Barb maybe they are both W. filfera. I thought one was a W. filibusta. I`ve noticed the trunks are diferent colours when the are young. The filifera is a dull orange colour while the robusta trunk is a brighter reddish colour. The fronds are a deeper green on robusta and duller olive color on filife...

Kent that`s great you got them to survive with only mulch. -18c 0f is pretty darn cold especially for the Chinese fan palm. Are you still just using mulch now they are that much bigger? I`m going to give a Chinese fan palm a try in the ground next spring after seeing what you`ve been able to do. John

My 2 cents. Put a sealed sturdy plastic enclosure over it. Keep it dry. Mulch. Keep some extra heating inside in case it gets really cold 0f -18c (You never know). Give the crown a treatment of copper fungiside before the cold hits. I have lost a couple of 3 gal needles until I gave my recent plante...

Robocaesar. The basjoos in the 4th photo are huge . The photo was taken near my Grandma`s house in South Vancouver. They probably got fried in Dec. that year. I`m sure Jubea`s would need protection in an 8b being a smaller size for quite a few years until the trunk is large enough to sustain itself ...
