Here on the northern Oregon coast, we've been moved from zone 8 to 9. :D

But, got to zone 8 temps in December 2013. :(

I'll still take risks, but every few years, or decades, watch out.

This news story has a different edit that includes the sound of the shots fired, again, captured by a tourist to the Maya site. It opens with gun shots, and closes with Chameadorea palms. http://www.patrickjonesbelize.com/2014/09/30/online-video-posts-purportedly-captured-sound-fatal-gunshots/ The s...

Palm poachers kill police officer

Palms are a fun hobby for us, but they are a deadly serious matter in some places. Many of you know I spend time in the rainforests of Belize, for my own research on wildlife and to help with an effort to deter poachers who steal macaw nestlings for the international trade in rare parrots. Many of t...

Then all that is left is the electric heat in there to keep it from getting too cold, but not hot. I like pipe heating tape, but most here use c9 (incandescent) christmas lights on a thermocube.

Well, I'm sure it can be done, but sustainably? I'm skeptical. Sooner or later something will go wrong.
With Trachy, needle palms, etc. you have a big margin of error.

Awesome!
As a scientist, do the same for these and the black ones you harvest later.

Personally, Sabal are pretty easy. But, warm is good. Just keep it the same warm for these as for the ones you get later.

May I suggest YOU do the experiment? Green/early vs. late/black? Both species? 100 seeds condition? I can help with the stats.

Nice crepe myrtles! I think these can be used up north, where summers get hot.
Plus, they recover well after unusually cold winters.

I've never done research on this but I too wait until they turn dark. Would be fun to find out if germination success differes between early/green and late/dark. 'Cause, if you wait too long the birds get them.

There are folks here who know more than I, so take this with a grain of salt (Magnesium Sulfate, preferably). I am a big fan of pipe heating tape. Your local hardware store sells it. Wrap it around trunk and spear base, at least. It comes on when the built-in thermometer sense temperatures close to ...

I had a dawn redwood once. Nice, but of course deciduous.

You can grow vines up the corpse of your Sequoia if you want to salvage something from your effort.

ID help: red banana, upright flower

I was hiking this afternoon in a forest East of the Arrenal Volcano in Costa Rica. I saw the odd (to me) red banana with an upright flower: While bananas are grown commercially here, this is not ...
