canadian plant, I looked up the hibiscus moscheutos, and it seems to be the same thing that I planted here, and that everyone grows around here without problems. The crape myrtles are from the SE USA. Most people around here just cut them back to the ground every year, but I'm experimenting with cov...

Hello... Just a quick reply after skimming through this post... Here in zone 6a southern Indiana, the Adam's Needle Yucca grows like a weed, and is certainly a tropical-looking plant, so look into that one... Also the musa basjoo banana, I've had these in the ground for 5 years with amazing performa...

Well... I wouldn't move... I like the situation that I have here, but I really wish that I was just 1 zone south of where I am right now. I'm 6a, and if I was in 7a or 7b, I could probably get my needle palms, trachy's and crape myrtles through the winter without much protection. That would make my ...

I'm not an expert by any means, but I have heard success stories with Washys into zone 6, as long as the winter protection is done correctly. I've been looking for one myself, but all I seem to find at the Home Depot's and similar stores in my area are majesty palms and other species that would most...

Road trip to southern Virginia... any suggestions?

Next month, I'll be driving to the Virginia beach area to visit family. I've heard that there are a few palm species native to this area, or just a few hours south. I'd like to get some palms to bring back with me, whether buying them at local places or digging them up in the wilderness (which I hav...

Hi Wayne. Nice palm you have there! Did you keep it outside over the winter or did you pot it up and bring it in? My local Lowe's has some nice 6 foot palms like that for around $25, and I've been thinking about picking one up.

Now that I've seen these heat cables, I've got visions of myself out in the flower beds digging little bitty trenches and planting that cable all over the place.. and I just got done with all the mulch! Arg! :)

Good to see that there is new growth! It would be a real shame for a tree that nice to die... I'm sure it wasn't cheap either:)

I hope you have better luck than I've had with transplanting your bananas... I moved two basjoo babies that were about 3 feet tall from the south side of my house to my new bed on the east side, and a week later they still look terrible... I'm hoping they recover. Hopefully, yours will take on quick...

need advice on planting my new trachys outside! Newbie!!!

I ordered 2 trachy's and 1 needle palm a few days ago, and they should arrive soon. They are said to be 2-3 feet tall. I have a new flower bed tilled on the east side of my house, and plan on planting the trachys about 2 feet from the foundation, with long-term functionality in mind. My question is:...

Welcome aboard Michael! I'm a newbie here myself as well, just joined a few nights ago, so maybe we can learn all of this stuff together:) I spent a little time in Florence a couple years ago when I did the grand opening for the Guitar Center store there... nice town. Best of luck!

From Indiana... new here and clueless! :)

Thought it best to start things off with one good neutral post, since I'm sure I'll be plaguing you all with questions on a somewhat regular basis from this point on:) Anyways, I live on a farm in Centerpoint Indiana (zone 6a). I've grown banana plants for the past 4 years, but this year I wanted mo...
