Cameron, sorry to hear you are down to one. Andy, yours look great. I'd love to learn more about E. diflexa. My 7 of 31... three are still alive and growing. They all suffered terminal growth damage. All recovered, one of which from the soil level. I think they put on no extra size, only spent the w...

We spent the day skiing today!
Barb, congrats on the first snow. We skiied today in London, Ontario. About 175km west of us here... I didnt know they got pummelled with snow (52cm) last weekend. Unbelievable lake effect snow quantities in that area. http://london.ctvnews.ca/polopoly_fs/1.1558147!/httpImage/image.jpeg_gen/derivati...

Ski resorts haven't opened this early in 25 years!
In Southern Ontario and Western New York more than half a dozen ski resorts are opening today or tomorrow. It has been 25 years or more since a November opening day.
Igor and Andy, looks like the winter you had last year, we have this year?
We are talking about skiing tomorrow!

What is your most precious, rare or irreplaceable plant?
My wife asked me the other day... "If our house was burning down, would you save a plant from the fire?" Hesitated, but answered yes... but I had more than one plant I'd want to save! What are yours? My most uncommon: Avocado, 3 yrs, grown from seed (3 feet tall, three feet wide, just grew...

I'd cover the trachy for the 22'f. Call the local appliance stores or Lowes or Depot. Ask them for a cardboard box from a stove or fridge. Use that. saran/plastic wrap the top. Quick fix that can fold up. Good timing for the cold. Appliances are a big commodity approaching Black Friday (As they set ...

Osage orange collecting this past weekend
Brought the family out to collect Osage oranges after a movie this past weekend. Usually, I include them in our winter urn arrangements. Maclura pomifera has some of the hardest, most rot resistant wood there is.. aside from some exotics. : ) <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/10...

Night Lighting, Palm boxes lit and thermocubes working
Got home and all the boxes were warming up with their lights on. Two of the boxes are lit with eight c9 bulbs each on a tc-3. The Medjool date palm is on a constant four c9 bulbs with additional switch controlled 13w CFL for nights getting colder than -9c. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/...

What lamp holder are you using? Isn't a problem if the lamp is too close to the thermocube? Tavi, my thoughts exactly, and is why i have the pigtail of about six inches and a plug on it then the thermocube, for some distance (instead of directly plugged in to the t-cube). I used a plant stake with ...

I have some bamboo from Jim in Niagara growing in this here pot. I reuse soil from up-potting and failed seed sowing attempts, so I often get volunteers. Not pretty but
It should keep the chill off my nannas and fig. As well as serve as outdoor storage for larger plants. Decided not to build a flimsy hoop house this year. The inspiration was a glass shower door for 90%off as the entrance, not bad for 11 bucks. http://s15.postimg.org/g0ug0e6rr/IMG_00000314.jpg To th...

My answer is no Dasylirion nor any Nolina will survive in 6a. But I have seedlings of Dasylirion texanum, longissima and wheeleri off to a good start on my heat mats. The test for 7a will be next winter. Biggest factor is wet/cold freeze-thaw cycles. One or two thaws is alright for these on the edge...
