Here is an update. I posted some pictures on Palms.org and got 2 responces and we think that the palm in the ground labled Butia is indeed a Brahea edulis. This is much better than Washingtonia! In the next month or so I will try digging some of the palms out of the ground. Hopefully they will make ...

You have a lot of nice tropicals there Jim. The first look at the pictures I did not realize that was a caster bean plant there. I would have never thought of cultivating them as the greenleaf varieties are perenial weeds here.

Thanks for the ideas. If it is not a Washingtonia then I better hold onto it. I have collected Brahea edulis seeds before so they could be that instead. I will the picture on the recomended forum later on tonight when I have more time.

Here are some more pictures: The first one is what I though was a Butia. Now I'm thinking that it is a Washingtonia. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/32696326@N07/5015312242/" title="Washingtonia by hellos1011, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4129/50...

Very healthy looking cycads. That Dicksonia looks very healthy, too! :) All these seem to have liked your cool Summer. As for the Jubaea, well, that is the palm I am least qualified to talk about. The few seedlings (Sabal) I am growing I leave in pots. It actually never occurred to me to give them ...

I believe it is a Butia capitata, however the other one I thought was a Butia turned out to be a fan palm. It looks like some of my seeds have been mixed up.

Does anyone know what the right time of year to dig up palm seedlings would be? I know that at some point in time I will need to dig up the Jubaeas, however I am waiting untill the ones that I have in pots starte doing well.

Thanks

Dylan

Pictures From Today

I took some pictures today of some of the Palms and Cycads that I have. We have had an unusually cool summer this year. Highs have been in the upper 60's and low to mid 70's with lots of fog. We have gotten below 50 degrees each month so far this year. Things have been growing so slowly. <a href=&qu...

I cut off all of the leaves on my potted sago in spring/early summer if they leaves are looking ugly. I then fertilize it and in 1-2 months it puts out a new set of leaves. I have done this for Cycas revoluta and Zamia furfuracea with good results. Do you see any scale on the plant? On the in ground...

The Jubaeas that I have grown have taken 9+ months before they have germinated. Some have come up about 2 years later. I gave up on the first ones I planted and planted something else in their pot. Later on I had surprise palms popping up. Now I plant the seeds in the ground and let them do their th...

The Jubaeas are outside, some growing in sun others are in shade. I have a few small Butias as well and they are doing great in the same conditions. I also pull out Washingtonias and Phoenix canariensis as weeds. I don't have the space for these to be popping up on their own. I will try to post some...

I wonder if they are as hardy as the Graptopetalum paraguayense you can see next to the A.havardiana. [/quote] I have Aeonium haworthii then non-varigated form of A. 'Kiwi' and it is one of the easiest to grow. From what plants I have seen of A. 'Kiwi' it is not as strong as the non-varigated form a...

Jubaea chiliensis

Hello everyone, 2-3 years ago I planted my first palm seeds including Jubaea chiensis. After about a year I noticed the first plants coming up. The first 1-2 leaves were the largest and each newer leaf after those is smaller and smaller. These are the container grown palms. All of the seedlings that...

That's a nice cactus garden. Is that an E. hordius in there as well?

The Echiveria thing looks to be an Aeonium 'kiwi'.
