Its been cold up here but nothing record breaking. Its actually been much warmer than the previous years. At last you get a good amount of snow tim. Everything should be fine. I just took a look at Niagra falls temps. Theyre looking at -25C tonight. Record daily low is -12C. Bloody cold again aroun...

Hope you're still warm out there, here in T.O. we've got the coldest absolute temps we've had for years and years forecast for tonight. It's supposed to hit -23C (-9F) tonight, then -24C (-11F) on Friday night. I think I'll stay home! The extreme minimum (since Jan 1. 2001) is -23.3 °C, which occur...

I looked inside my green house in everything is very moldy :( That's too bad, sorry. Good job building it, however, it's probably air-tight. I'd give a shot of copper fung. on a milder day with some fresh air. You should be fine anyways, there's mold spoors around all the time. Just needs a little ...

NP, A picture of the protection would be great to see on a palm that big. There is a good sized CIDP in one of Vancouver's eastern suburbs that I drive past occasionally. It has a decent sized box built around it from Coreplast. Thing must be 15' tall, but the one in your picture looks even bigger....

Any pic of that CIDP protected? I would agree it would be great to start out with a palm at least 8ft but I don't think most can afford that since if your bitten by the palm bug....have to have MANY! lol So true Scott, those CIDP's sure aren't cheap. Not sure if I would invest in experimenting with...

For some of these Yuccas, do you need to have the seed go through a slight freeze cycle before germination plantings? Many seeds still left on the Y. Filim. stalks, that are left out around here, seems to germinate in the Springtime. I'm curious if the Winter freeze is a necessary part of their cycl...

Hey Tim, that's a great idea with the kiddie pool. Besides the fact that it creates interest over the winter by monitoring growth patterns and behaviour etc. I was referring to Valleyview mostly and maybe Humber. Valleyview does get large washies and the odd super large Bizzy, the rest are Roebeleni...

[/quote] a 1 gal pot CIDP might be happy in pot(s) for a few years, say, until it's a 5 gallon. Mine did best in the hottest windiest spot, with lots of water. It actually lived in pots for probably 30+ years, finally ending up in a plastic garbage can with tons of drain holes drilled in the bottom....

No complains here either! This has been exceptionally warm December so far. Today's morning temp.: 50F / 10C. The only downside is we rarely see the sun these days 8) Same here, not much sun at all in fact... We have been very lucky so far, however, we are expecting 'Santabomb' on Christmas day... ...

Curious if you have noted any growth improvements with your warm watering in spring. Great question, can't confirm nor deny. Lol. However, my Sabal Palmetto put on a good half foot of growth in the early half of summer along with my Pindo somewhat, then tapered off with some consistent but slower g...

Awesome response Paul. Appreciate it. I will follow those instructions and keep them dry. I'm growing a Blue Americana, in which I lost the mother plant last winter due to wetness, however a pup survived. I then transplanted the pup which grew 2 more this summer which I don't want to lose either. I ...

I'm sure in time I'll have to use the heat cable when in the ground palms here get too big to build cages around. Most though I installed a 6ft heat tape in the ground when I planted the palms. It's thermostat stays inside the enclosure so may never come on if thermocube does it's job, but at least...

The deep freeze in Southern Ontario is not expected to be as bad, listed highs for the remaining week are around the 35oF (3oC), lows of 25 ish. Got the palm huts up as well today as it was wicked mild out. Extra work this year because of the Pindo and Washy. Pics to follow. As the cold is settling ...

Hardiness Zones Changing slowly
Stumbled over this.... West Coast with higher increases. "The update is based on plant hardiness maps originally developed by Agriculture Canada and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They compared the data used for the original zones and maps from the 1931 to 1960 period with more recent obse...

My take is that fungicides are more for the plant when it emerges from dormancy in the Spring. I apply a copper form in the fall before boxing up, that way I know its there for the Spring. Not too much though, as some fungicides can be too harmful or lethal for a younger palm if there's no ventilati...

I'm pretty sure the Roxul panels will ply with the inner curve of the barrels. I just dont now how to glue them onto the inner side of the barrel. I like Syano10's idea of shrink wrap to fasten the barrel wall shut. In your picture you have that re-bar mesh in the back, that can be your structure wr...

Hi Scott, Comfortboard, I've attached the link below. They are found at lowes. I find the easy to store as they are somewhT rigid and small enough to handle easily. They can be pliable as well to a certain degree. It maybe worth a try. http://www.roxul.com/files/RX-NA_EN/pdf/Brochures%20and%20Sell%2...

I like Beny's idea, however I would use the Roxul (fire, water and mold proof) insulation, instead of the standard pink. Besides its not fiberglass, where the micro-chard's won't splinter inside the fronds, causing further damage. I agree also, the Pindo leaves seems to be more resistant to the encl...

Pretty cool, that should do it. Those drums will cut down the wind chill bigtime. The fronds on the inside should have a frost cloth around them, wound snugly. Only thing I see, if the fronds touch the cold drum plastic they will get frost burnt for sure. Shrink wrap the outside with vents, and C9's...
