Thanks for a great article which confirmed my suspicion. I totally fried a Pindo and trachy with bud rot, using a Bordo Copper (Tribasic Copper Sulphate 53%) powder mixed with water, the stuff wasn't cheap either. Perhaps also, my mix was to rich. However, dollar store HP saved my unprotected needle...

Thank you Paul, So is there a place where we can check the usda zone for our area, or we have to calculate it ourselves? Yeah, check this out, USDA for Ontario... This seems to include a detailed map, unlike the Canadian sites I've come across which seem vague at best. http://www.plantmaps.com/inte...

Polar Vortex Survivors Club....
After inspecting further during this mild spell, my 8' Pindo and 12' Palmetto, so far so good... My Agave is showing signs of dehydration and Sago looking light green now, hopefully they bounce back. I've tried to keep them dry as possible, but the winter dampness cuts through concrete it seems. 8' ...

Yeah that's probably what contributed to the dehydration. Mine was unheated and left as is, and treated it like a Rhodo, essentially no heat, just straw and frost cloth. I would keep the lights off at this point. My S.minor has a burn on one of the stems from a light... perhaps with some real cold t...

I'm in the same boat as you two... I was in one enclosure today, seems half the fronds are damaged due to (cold? dehydration?) I know I fried 2 with the heat cable directly on, but maybe the cold hurt the others. Center is nice and green with one or 2 other fronds just right. Sunday I'll add some wa...

Thanks Chad, I may just go Tipi style next year because it seems easier (providing they live). The foam was bloody pricy (wife still gives me dirty looks...), but they are toasty. PVC sounds light, solid and inexpensive, I will try that with the smaller ones like you said. Then I'll bubble wrap the ...

Your enclosures don't appear to be airtight which is good. They seem large enough, but not too large. If any condensation occurs, at least it will be on the inner wall and not on the tree itself. My large one is 4'x4'x12' with room to walk around inside, and no signs of moisture buildup. I will be i...

I'm curious to how yours will handle as well Chad. South Carolina shoreline (North too I suppose) is showing 10C (50f), dropping by tonight to -7C (20f), then hovering around the low 30's for a high. Inland must be colder. I would hope there is no rain forecasted, then having the spear freeze over. ...

Short lived temps, should be back to normal by Thursday night. You'll be fine. Same with me, with 2 strings of 25 on my large S.Palmetto plus a heat cable wrapped around the trunk and fronds that I actually unplugged, I lost 3 large fronds from cooking them already. I have 1 string of lights (25) on...

WOW Now that's cold! So true Scott, it's the first year in the ground palms that are fragile. If they get through this 'Polar Vortex', they can take anything in the future, and job well done on winterization.... I just plugged in the heat cable buried under each root ball for these extreme cold snaps.

Awesome information Paul, thank-you very much. I appreciate your input. Definitely worth a shot, I'll give Kevin a shout. I wasn't aware of that nursery. I'm around 4 miles (6km) north of Lake ON. Winters a degree or 2 cooler in my area, summers a degree or 2 (sometimes more) warmer... I'll do more ...

Canada Crape Myrtles?? Where?
A few of you are having some success with these in Z6A regions. I'm looking to add some visual contrast to my Nerium Pink Oleanders which are die back perennials. My regional sources haven't heard of any Crape Myrtles (dwarf or not) requests by anyone from this area. It would be unique indeed to try...

Hey Barb, Thanks! Yeah I've seen his vid's in the past with the PVC piping, but I wouldn't know how to fasten insulation in my case. I may try using it for my large Cabbage palm, tipi-style with tones of bubble wrap next year instead. I was pretty terrified up the ladder above my current enclosure. ...

Hey Teebee, That's a great vid of your yard, those palms look very happy there along the fence. Wind is a killer and they look well sited. I was out in Markham where the nursery deals with many palms including a 12' Biz. Must weigh a ton, however they had all these exotic Tropicals (foxtails, bottle...

Thanks RJ, yes they have excellent quality products. I'll be experimenting with different trees this spring from direct southern dealers.

After trying the 'mummy wrap' method in previous years, I've suffered some losses on smaller Trachy's and Pindo's. Even after trunk cutting and using HP/ Copper to revive. I've reverted back to the 'box' method for this year... so far so good. Below is the yard now, just a week after our 'ice storm'...
