Oh, no, Tim. Thought your Washy was in a box w lights :? Thanks everybody! Re Washies, somebody here (ages ago) said they thought Washies hated having their fronds tied up. Think I agree. It'd take a hell of a large teepee for next Fall but that might keep some air movement and prevent all that cra...

When you're above 0 (freezing) give it a treatment with a fungicide just in case it is alive. -16F is probably going to be lethal (depending on duration establishment, etc), -16C is survivable but almost certainly would cause a lot of damage. If it saw anything like -16F in or near the meristem the...

KSpalmguy, good for you to have purchased hardy tropicals, and I like your enthusiasm, because I see you on other forums asking the same. To answer your own question, what do you think you should do based on your observations? Go with your educated gut. If it was me, in your zone, I would wait 30 pa...

...Introducing the Sun, after a long cold spell of darkness!
Too many theories out there to know which is best... Once had a 4' W. Robusta that was green upon uncovering cold turkey, within 24hrs it went white (except for the spear). So I'm assuming it was a shock for them to photosynthesis all that in one shot. I've heard of the 'acclimatization' process, wh...

I wouldn't waste my time with CIDP's unless you are really in the deep south of Texas. Upper Texas zones 7 through 8 will not support the hardest of dates. Verdict: In a box, Butia with heat cable in root ball plus 20 Xmas lights above grade, are a winner. Heat cable underground only when it dips below -8C (17F) occasionally as a precaution, the snow should insulate the ground, therefore you don't have to leave it plugged all winter long... crazy expen...

Pindo's only fruit at minimum 8'-10ft, 10-12 years specimens at least. Unfortunately a 4' Pindo, may have to wait a few years yet, as they are relatively slow growers. Styrofoam box method is usually the best bet. Fertilize Spring and Summer only, with lots of water in the first few years. Dry soil ...

The entire second half of 2013 has been 'below seasonal' in the East. Every forecast or report since August, has indicated that it's been below seasonal averages. Besides since Early 2013, the winter was clinging on with a cold, damp and flooding Spring. Since then it was all down hill with floods t...

Cold hardy palms are best sited with your existing indigenous plants already in place. Having accents and splashes of tropicals are the best. Keep in mind, less is more with different elevations. Use Google Maps and explore some streets in areas that have these plants. This will give you ideas on wh...
